News24.com | ‘At that moment the baby stopped crying’: JMPD officers rescue abandoned baby
A baby abandoned in a blue carry bag near Johannesburg’s busy MTN taxi rank was saved by the quick thinking of two Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers on Thursday night.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said on Friday that officers Nathi Mkhabela and Richard Makhuvele of the recovery unit were patrolling the inner city when they noticed a group of street children huddled together, staring at something.
Mkhabela went over and when he got closer, he heard a baby crying.
The infant had been abandoned in the bag on the corner of Plein and Quartz streets.
He brought the recovery truck closer to protect the scene and called emergency services for help.
“The baby was crying profusely so officer Mkhabela picked the baby up and at that moment, the baby stopped crying,” said Fihla.
The officers took the baby out of the cold night air and turned up the heater in their truck to keep the little girl warm until the ambulance arrived for her.
Paramedics checked the little girl and estimated that she was three to five days old.
She was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital for observation and social workers will decide what to do next.
Messages of appreciation for the officers were posted on the Facebook profile of JMPD chief David Tembe.

News24.com | Disruptions reportedly ‘collapse’ ANC eThekwini meeting after mayor removed
An ANC meeting, held to discuss the removal of Zandile Gumede as mayor and her regional executive committee, has reportedly collapsed after some delegates caused disruptions and overturned tables.
A spokesperson in the region was not immediately available to comment, but eNCA and TimesLIVE reported that the meeting, intended to discuss the regional task team’s decisions, did not go as planned.
eNCA reported that scuffles broke out over credentials and the decision to redeploy officials.
According to TimesLIVE, the meeting at Moses Mabhida Stadium was attended by eThekwini branch secretaries, chairpersons and municipal councillors.
Delegates milled around the parking lot, with a small police contingent standing by.
Earlier, News24 reported that Gumede’s supporters still wanted her to be the City’s first citizen and to return as chairperson of the ANC in the eThekwini region.
Gumede was suspended and fired this week from her position following a two-day special meeting of the ANC’s provincial executive committee (PEC), which enacted the recommendations of the provincial working committee that she be recalled.
Until two months ago, she was the chairperson of the eThekwini region – the ANC’s biggest region in the country.
Gumede is currently out on R50 000 bail after being arrested earlier this year on corruption charges related to a multimillion-rand Durban Solid Waste tender.
The party previously put her on special leave for 30 days in June, which was extended twice after the PEC failed to make a decision.
Spokesperson for Gumede’s supporters, Mzomuhle Dube, said they didn’t believe the PEC would act in good faith in the matter.
“We have a responsibility to apply fairness,” he said.

Health24.com | How the build-up of proteins in the heart often goes undiagnosed, even though it’s potentially fatal
A potentially fatal build-up of abnormal proteins in the heart and other organs is being delayed in its diagnosis and undertreated – despite new drugs that can combat it, a new study suggests.
Although the condition, known as transthyretin amyloidosis, is still perceived as rare, advances in imaging techniques have led to greater awareness. Increasingly, it’s being recognised as a cause of heart failure in older adults, with autopsy studies showing these proteins in the hearts of 25% of the elderly.
Poor quality of life
A study published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation looked at data from 1 034 patients who had different types of amyloidosis in the United Kingdom between 2001 and 2017. Amyloidosis happens when abnormal proteins join and attach to organs, tissues, nerves and other places in the body, disrupting normal function.
Researchers found both hereditary and acquired amyloidosis are associated with a “markedly poor quality of life at the time of diagnosis” and many patients cycle in and out of the hospital before the disease is ever detected. The typical patient visited a hospital an average of 17 times in the three years leading up to a diagnosis.
The study also found that patients with a gene variant of the disease – mostly those of Afro-Caribbean ethnicity – typically have worse heart and kidney symptoms when they’re diagnosed and a poorer chance of survival.
Dr Julian D. Gilmore, the study’s lead author, said the results underscore the need for medical professionals to get better at detecting and treating amyloidosis.
“Our aim is to slow or stop the progression of this potentially fatal condition. But without specific treatment, patients invariably get worse,” said Gilmore, a professor at the National Amyloidosis Centre at University College London.
“Nobody really knows what the prevalence of this disease is, but the referrals we are getting are increasing pretty dramatically year after year. There’s no sign of that slowing down.”
Condition often misdiagnosed
Dr Mathew Maurer, a cardiologist who was not involved in the research, called it an important study that could convince doctors to consider the disease with the gravity it deserves. “The first issue is that it’s no longer rare – it’s common.”
In 2017, Maurer was lead author of a report in Circulation that concluded the condition “is often misdiagnosed and the delayed diagnosis has significant consequences for patients”. That report surveyed more than 500 patients with the disease and found the average time from initial symptoms to diagnosis was two years.
That lag time could shrink in the future. In the past, amyloidosis could only be diagnosed by a heart biopsy, but it can now be more easily detected with bone scans and a cardiac MRI, Maurer said.
“We have to leverage these imaging techniques early and avoid new amyloid from getting into the heart so we can meaningfully change outcomes for patients. And to do that, we have to get doctors to start thinking about this every day,” said Maurer, director of the Cardiac Amyloidosis Program at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.
Both Maurer and Gilmore said they were encouraged by two new drugs that seem to be successful in battling amyloidosis: tafamidis (Vyndaqel), which was approved in May by the US Food and Drug Administration, and AG10, which is currently being tested in clinical trials.
Gilmore said he’d like to see a future study that compares tafamidis with AG10, as well as a study that examines which drug might be best combined with other drugs.

Sport24.co.za | Brits backs ‘amazing’ Scarra ahead of Bok debut
Cape Town – Springbok captain Schalk Brits believes that debutant Scarra Ntubeni will impress in South Africa’s ‘Farewell Test’ against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria this weekend.

Ntubeni toured with the Springboks in 2013 and 2014 but has had a long wait to pull on the jersey for the first time in a Test.

“I’ve seen Scarra from a young age and although I’m very grey, he is getting more grey than me! It’s amazing to see a guy like that who have been in the trenches, had a lot of injuries and coming through the system,” said Brits.
“I’m backing him and he’s backing me up tomorrow. To learn everything in one week is tough but he is a clever player so I can’t wait to see him the Green and Gold and I hope he puts in a performance (when he gets onto the field) that is unbelievable.”
