3 Foot Stretches You Should Do Every Day, According to Podiatrists
Age does a number on your entire body, including your feet. (That’s why your mom loves sensible shoes.) To keep your toes in tip-top shape, follow this expert advice from leading foot doctors.
Your feet (and those foot muscles) put in a lot of hard work throughout the day, whether you’re wearing high heels to work or literally pounding the pavement during your morning workout. Plus, as we get older, our feet start to show their age, no matter how many times we try that baby foot peel.
RELATED: 15 Stretches You Should Do Every Day
“One of the most common functional deformities is hyperpronation, or flat foot, which is known to cause many conditions like bunions, hammer toe, and plantar fasciitis,” explains LA-based podiatrist Albert A. Nejat, DPM, FACFAS. “Stretching the feet, but mainly the calves and hamstrings, can be very beneficial in reducing hyperpronation and other issues.” With that in mind, do these exercises three times every day to promote strong, healthy feet. (While you’re at it, considering working some other stretching into your routine—these lower back stretches are a great place to start.)
Runner’s Stretch
One of the best stretches for your feet is actually your run-of-the-mill cardio cooldown.
“There are two calf muscles that meet at the ankle to form your Achilles tendon, the soleus, and the gastroc, and they are responsible for the movement of your foot,” says North-Carolina based podiatrist and American Podiatric Medical Association spokesperson Jane Andersen, DPM. “These muscles are notoriously tight, so the best way to loosen them is with your classic runner’s stretch, ideally after exercise when your muscles are warmed up.”
Lean against the wall with your front leg bent and your back leg stretched straight behind you. Try to put the heel of your back leg down on the ground. Dr. Andersen recommends holding it for 30 seconds on each side to get a deeper stretch. This stretch can be done as part of your post-workout routine or even while you’re brushing your teeth.

Toe Stretch
Obviously, the key to healthy feet isn’t all in the legs.
“There are intrinsic muscles in your feet that move your toes, in between the metatarsal bones, and that keeps your toes from becoming contracted, which can ultimately develop into hammer toes,” says Dr. Andersen. “As you age, those muscles between your toes get weaker, so stretching them can slow down deterioration.”
Think of your foot like a hand, and spread out your toes like you would your fingers, opening them and bringing them back together. Aim for eight to ten stretches two or three times a day.
Morning Stretch
If you often wake with stiff legs and feet, try this exercise before even getting out of bed.
“In a seated position, place the mid-portion of a non-elastic strap on the bottom of your forefoot. You can use a leather belt, yoga strap, or even a towel,” says Dr. Nejat. “With a slightly bent knee and a straight back, gently pull the ankle up until you feel a pull in the back of your calf. Hold for about 20 seconds on each side, and try not to bounce the leg.”
Slowly bend and extend the knee for 20 seconds on each side. Finally, with your leg extended, bend your torso toward your knee to also get a stretch in your hamstring.
With consistent care of your precious paws, you can undo some of the damage that comes with activity and age, keeping your feet healthy (and pain-free) for years to come.

Sport24.co.za | Eddie Jones calls for clarity over head-high tackles
Twickenham – England coach Eddie Jones urged officials to make clear what constitutes a head-high tackle ahead of the upcoming Rugby World Cup following his side’s 33-19 warm-up win over Wales on Sunday.
Jones felt there were at least two incidents during the game which could have led to a red card, although the Australian refused to be more specific with his thinly-veiled criticism of French referee Mathieu Raynal.
But following the red card handed out to New Zealand’s Scott Barrett for a head-high shoulder charge on Australia captain Michael Hooper during the All Blacks’ shock 47-26 loss in Perth on Saturday – a decision made by Jerome Garces, another French referee – Jones said World Rugby needed to clarify the position ahead of the World Cup in Japan, which starts next month.
“I thought there was an issue with the referee,” Jones, who names his World Cup squad on Monday, told reporters.
“We saw a red card yesterday (Saturday) which affected the game.
“We need to get some consistency into that area of the game.
“In the World Cup if you lose a player through a red card as New Zealand did yesterday, it makes the game very difficult.
“I thought we saw two instances today where that could have happened. I urge World Rugby, although I don’t think they do anything at great pace do they, to get some consistency in that area because otherwise we will have games being destroyed by an inconsistent official making a decision on a law that’s not clear,” the former Australia and Japan coach added.
Jones is not alone in being concerned, with Wales great Jonathan Davies tweeting earlier on Sunday: “Referee will decide who wins the RWC (Rugby World Cup) this year, not the best team unfortunately.”
World Rugby are trying to crack down on challenges that could lead to serious head injuries.
But Jones was scathing about the decision to send Barrett off, saying: “I thought it was ridiculous. A bloke gets tackled, he goes to be second man in and his shoulder hits his head and he gets a red card.
“We can’t have that in the game. There has to be some common sense applied, but maybe common sense was applied today really well.
England’s victory prevented Six Nations champions Wales from going top of the world rankings and also ended the visitors’ 14-match winning streak.
It was achieved with anything but a first-choice side, Jones having to make three injury-enforced changes to his original team.
But three first-half tries from Billy Vunipola, Joe Cokanasiga and Luke Cowan-Dickie, all converted by flyhalf George Ford, who also kicked three second-half penalties, and a late Elliot Daly drop-goal saw England to an ultimately comfortable win in the first of four warm-up fixtures
“We learnt a bit about ourselves, learnt a bit about the squad so it was useful,” said Jones, whose side again play Wales – a potential World Cup quarter-final opponent – in Cardiff next weekend.
England were also able to withstand a fightback that saw Wales close to within five points midway through the second half.
It was in marked contrast to their previous match, when England squandered a 31-0 lead in a remarkable 38-38 draw with Scotland at Twickenham in March.
“It means we’ve learnt a little bit from the Six Nations where we let ourselves down a little bit in that area, so that was pleasing for us,” said Jones.
News24.com | Ramaphosa expresses confidence in ANC North West Interim Provincial Committee
President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed confidence in the ANC’s North West Interim Provincial Committee (IPC), calling on the team to “turn the situation around” in the province.
The National Working Committee, led by Ramaphosa, met with the IPC, at the Rustenburg Civic Centre on Saturday.
This was to inaugurate the IPC following the dissolution of the Provincial Interim Task Team, which was installed following the dissolution of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
ANC secretary general Ace Magashule said Ramaphosa asked the IPC to “rebuild, renew and unite the ANC”.
“He called on each member of the IPC to work extremely hard to ensure that ANC branches are strengthened and vibrant. He further called on the IPC to focus on service delivery to transform the lives of the people in the province.”
In February, it emerged that Ramaphosa had taken it upon himself to help bring about unity and stability in the embattled province by being part of a rapid response team.
ANC acting spokesperson Dakota Legoete said at the time that Ramaphosa would be able to use his experience as a skilled negotiator and mediator to bring about stability.
At the end of last month, the ANC’s National Executive Committee resolved to disband the PEC.
City Press reported that this was because of deep divisions that impacted on governance.
The IPC is expected to appoint a Provincial Working Committee and is tasked with convening a provincial conference in nine months.
Ramaphosa said the NEC would be deployed to all municipalities in to address the poor performance of some of them.
