Whitney Way Thore Just Got Real About Weight Loss Compliments—And Why She Doesn’t Want To Be Anyone’s Inspiration
Real talk: Mentioning a person's weight loss (or apparent weight loss) is typically meant as a compliment, but it's not always well received—and with damn good reason. Take it from reality TV star Whitney Way Thore, who recently called out Instagram commenters who congratulated her on even just appearing to have lost weight.
In a new Instagram post, shared yesterday, Thore, star of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, opened up to her followers about this. "Just had to get this off my chest," she wrote in the caption. "Reminder: Your value does not increase if your weight decreases."
She spoke out in a selfie-style video after noticing that many of her followers liked to congratulate her on the weight they think she's lost. “I’ve been reading my comments, and a large majority of them are people congratulating me for losing some amount of weight that you have perceived that I’ve lost—but I guarantee you that I’m still fat as s—t,” Thore says.
She goes on to say that she doesn’t want to be equated with your hashtag fitness goals—because she’s more than that. “I’m not out here to be anybody’s weight loss inspiration. I’m a complex human being focusing on a lot of other things in life besides losing weight. [Being congratulated on weight loss is] not something I will ever feel comfortable saying thank you for.”

Her post comes at a time when the body positivity movement has been somewhat trampled on by diet culture. The message of the true body positivity movement is simple: Respect and love your body regardless of what you look like. But fitness goals and weight loss challenges have, in recent years, horned in on that message and warped it into a new one: Respect and love your body by being thin.
This isn't the first time Thore has spoken out about unneeded Instagram comments. Last year she took to Instagram to call out trolls, explaining that she simply doesn't care what hateful people have to say. "When you come into my space, I can make you leave. This doesn't mean I can't handle a contrary opinion. It means I take no stock in your opinion and it's unnecessary noise."
Thore’s recent post is a great reminder that we're all more than our appearances (and that weight-loss compliments aren't always appreciated, and often miss the mark). She explains at the end of her enlightening PSA that she doesn’t want people to be impressed by her weight loss—or again, her percieved weight loss. Instead, she hopes anyone who has been touched by her story finds inspiration in her self-care and truly body positive message.
She says, “If you’re inspired by me, I’m glad, but I hope it’s because I’m a woman who learned to love herself no matter what size she is.” Amen.

News24.com | Committee concerned police stations lack evidence kits for rape survivors
The portfolio committee on the police is concerned about the shortage of kits to gather evidence from rape survivors, its chairperson, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, said in a statement about Women’s Month.
She called on the police’s senior management to urgently revise its strategies to deal with gender-based violence.
“In commemorating Women’s Month, the committee is aware that the rights of women and children continue to be undermined as a result of acts of violence perpetrated against them,” read the statement.
It is concerned about the shortage of the kits required to collect evidence from rape victims and called on the police to urgently deal with this matter and ensure there availability at all police stations.
The committee also called on police management to ensure that police stations were at all times ready to deal with acts of violence against women and children. It also wants the family violence, child protection and sexual offences units to be expanded to enhance the specialist investigative capacity to deal with gender-based violence.
Furthermore, the committee has called for police management to ensure there are adequately trained female members to deal with gender-based violence victims and be able to take samples by using the sexual violence evidence kits.
The committee also wants training modules, including a component for gender-based violence, rolled out for trainee police officers.
“The minister [Bheki Cele] made a few undertakings during his budget vote speech around gender-based violence, it is now up to the national police commissioner [General Khehla Sitole] and his leadership cohort to implement those promises,” Joemat-Pettersson said.
“Of high priority must be strengthening strategies to deal with the scourge of gender-based violence and establishing an environment conducive for women and children to report these cases at police stations.”
However, Joemat-Pettersson said the committee is cognisant of the fact there was a need for a collaborative and multi-dimensional approach to successfully end the scourge of gender-based violence.
This includes measures to reduce alcohol and substance abuse across the country, measures to grow the economy and decrease unemployment and poverty, as well as a societal commitment to monitor abuses against women in their communities.
“The committee, in performing its oversight duty, will intensify its monitoring of the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act and the Sexual Offences Act by checking the support and assistance victims receive at all police stations,” the statement read.

Health24.com | Researchers reveal more clues to the genetics behind an inherited cholesterol disorder
High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, but not all forms of it are the same. An underdiagnosed genetic condition called familial hypercholesterolaemia can cause dangerously high levels of cholesterol at an early age.
While scientists have determined FH is caused by genetic mutations that affect the body’s ability to remove LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, they haven’t pinned down all the genes involved for nearly one in three people who have FH.
But that may be beginning to change.
Cholesterol is vital
Scientists presented preliminary research at the American Heart Association’s Vascular Discovery conference in Boston showing more clues to the genetic roots of FH. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute researchers screened 19 114 genes and identified transgelin (TAGLN) as one of the genes of interest. Previous studies have found this gene could be associated in LDL metabolism.
When researchers disabled the TAGLN gene in cells, some cells tried to compensate.
“The cell tries to make more cholesterol because cholesterol is vital for the cell to survive,” said Diego Lucero, the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the NHLBI. “Understanding this is important because it might have impacts on the magnitude of the clinical presentation of the disease.”
People with FH are exposed to chronically high levels of LDL from an early age, and their risk for premature heart disease is 20 times greater than the general population, according to the FH Foundation. Over time, the condition can lead to atherosclerosis, the build-up of plaque and narrowing of artery walls. As a result, signs of heart disease can show up decades earlier in people with FH compared to the general population.
The condition affects approximately one in 250 US adults. Yet, it remains largely underdiagnosed and undertreated.
Diagnosed with a blood test
“Less than 10% of those who have (FH) have actually been diagnosed, which leads to a lot of premature morbidity and mortality,” said Dr Samuel Gidding, chief medical officer for the FH Foundation. Someone who carries the altered gene has a 50% chance of passing it on to their children.
Yet, the challenge is diagnosing FH. Health care providers may not understand the difference between general high cholesterol and FH and may not screen high-risk people, said Gidding, who was not involved in the new study.
FH can be diagnosed with a simple blood test and a reported family history of cardiovascular disease. Doctors look for LDL levels over 190 in adults and over 160 in children, and onset of heart disease before age 60 in men and before 50 in women. Genetic testing can confirm the diagnosis.
Once identified, there are effective ways to treat the condition, Gidding said. Early treatment with medications, as well as maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle, can lower the risk of premature heart attacks and strokes.
The new research and further work identifying new genes involved in the development of FH could lead to better diagnosis and treatment, Gidding said. “Anytime an individual gene like this could help explain variations in lipid level, it could be a drug target.”
