Head-size measurements can help screen for long-term IQ problems in very premature or very low birth weight babies, researchers say.
“Measuring head circumference and thus head growth in early childhood is a proxy measure of brain volume growth in early childhood,” said study senior author Dieter Wolke, of the University of Warwick in England.
Faster growth
It’s “simple and cheap to do and as shown in our research, slow head growth is a specific warning sign for potential neurocognitive problems,” Wolke, a psychology professor, said in a university news release.
The study included about 400 babies born in Germany in 1985–1986 and followed into adulthood. About half were born sooner than 32 weeks’ gestation and/or under 3.3 pounds (1.49kg). The others were born full-term.
The children’s head circumference was checked at birth, five months, 20 months and four years of age. The kids then took intelligence tests at six and eight years, and at 26 years of age.
The very premature/very low birth weight infants had smaller heads at birth, but between birth and 20 months their heads grew relatively faster than that of full-term children because they had to catch up, the researchers said.
Brain volume growth
Study first author Julia Jaekel, of the University of Tennessee, noted that “those who showed faster head growth, whether preterm or term-born, had higher intelligence scores at 26 years”.
In addition, the findings showed that “catch-up head growth was particularly beneficial for intelligence scores in very premature and very low birth weight children. It was a better predictor than how early or at what birth weight infants were born,” said Jaekel.
The results show that head growth reflects brain volume growth and is linked with long-term brain development, according to the researchers.
The study was published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society.

Former president Jacob Zuma’s name influenced a senior national defence official into issuing a flight clearance for the Gupta aircraft landing in Waterkloof, the judicial commission of inquiry into state capture has heard.
Major Thabo Ntshisi who works at the military base’s command post told the inquiry on Thursday that he took a decision when he was told that Zuma knew about the visit.
During his testimony, Ntshisi was read out telephone transcripts between him and Lieutenant Colonel Christine Anderson.
In the conversation, Anderson mentions “Number 1” adding that he “knows about this visit”.
Ntshisi said when he spoke to Anderson he wanted to find out if Waterkloof air force base could accommodate 217 people.

“When she mentioned that the president knows [about the visit] and how many people can be accommodated, I then took a decision [to issue the clearance number]”.
He said he was also told by South Africa ambassador to the Netherlands, Bruce Koloane that Zuma knew about the Gupta visit and the request for the flight clearance Ntshisi conceded that he acted under pressure to issue the clearance number for the Gupta aircraft to land at Waterkloof, when he heard Zuma’s name being mentioned.
He then changed his tune and said, “by using the President’s name doesn’t mean she put me under pressure”.
On Tuesday, Koloane, who is also the former head of state protocol admitted lying to Ntshisi to process the landing request. Koloane also admitted that he “name dropped” to pressure officials to expedite the processing of the flight clearance.

However, he added that “the minister of transport, nor the minister of defence, nor the president did not at any stage communicate to me that I should in any way deal with this matter, as it is expressed”.
“I also want to go on record, Mr Chair, that that was fundamentally nothing but name dropping, as it is popularly known nowadays,” he said.
Koloane also said he abused the powers of his office to facilitate the Gupta WaterKloof landing.
“I abused the power of my office in putting pressure on defence officials to expedite the processing of the flight clearance, but I did not have control of diplomatic channels,” he said.
Meanwhile, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor said she intends to have a discussion with President Cyril Ramaphosa about the suitability of Koloane’s ambassadorship to the Netherlands in light his testimony at inquiry, News24 reported.

At a media briefing ahead of her department’s budget vote in Parliament on Thursday, Pandor said: “With respect to Ambassador Koloane, I do think we need to have a discussion with the president. We’ve not had such a discussion as yet.
“It is my intention that we do discuss whether any particular action might be merited, be it some form of letter or further training or any other action the president might deem necessary.
“So it is a matter I will be taking up,” she said.

The South African National Defence Force will join an operation to clamp down on Cape Town’s gang infested areas on Friday, Police Minister Bheki Cele announced on Thursday evening.
He made the announcement towards the end of his budget speech, and elaborated further at a press briefing shortly thereafter.
He said after last weekend, where 13 people were killed in 24 hours in Phillipi, he spoke with Minister of Defence Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. They concluded: “This can’t continue.”
They then approached President Cyril Ramaphosa for “extra deployment” in the form of the SANDF. Ramaphosa assented.
Cele said they decided on this move, not because the DA has been agitating for it, but because the communities called for it through the Community Policing Forums.
On 02:00 Friday morning National Police Commissioner Kehla Sitole will give a “big contingent” of police and metro police officers their marching order to “seal” areas where gang violence is rife.
Within twelve hours, they will be joined by the SANDF.
Cele said they’ll be going after some of their regular “clients” – including people who are out on bail.
“We want the real stuff, not the pushers of the drugs,” he said. They will also go after illegal firearms.
“They’re here for us to police, to make sure not so many people die,” Cele said of the SANDF’s involvement.
The deployment is for three months and can be renewed.
“After that, there needs to be sustainability,” he said.
Sitole described the operation as a “high density, integrated, multidisciplinary, coordinated” operation.
He said the SANDF will be “led and commanded” by the police. He said they have the capacity to support the police.
“This time we call it Blue and Brown,” Sitole said.
He said the Defence Force also helped with policing during the elections.
“They did an excellent job.”
He said the operation will have a “stabilisation approach” to “stamp the authority of the state” on the area.
“There are certain areas that requires a quick response.”
