Running at a “two-hour marathon pace” requires specific physiological abilities. While these requirements have always been a great topic of debate, the actual demands had not been determined – until recently, that is. 

A recent study conducted by Professor Andrew Jones and a team of researchers revealed exactly what it takes – physiologically – for elite marathon runners to tackle a sub-two-hour marathon. The study was based on tests done on athletes participating in the Breaking2 project.

Higher oxygen intake

Breaking2 was a project initiated by Nike to break the two-hour barrier. Findings revealed that runners must possess a perfectly balanced rate of oxygen uptake (known as VO2 max), master moving efficiently and have a high lactate turnpoint. 

To test for these factors, 16 male distance runners took part in a detailed examination while running on a treadmill at a constant speed of 21.1km/h.

According to Professor Jones, “To run for two hours at this speed, athletes must maintain what we call ‘steady-state’ VO2. This means they meet their entire energy needs aerobically (from oxygen).”

Interestingly, 15 of the 16 runners from the study are from East Africa. It was also discovered that while running a marathon, elite runners take in twice as much oxygen as a normal person while sprinting.

Professor Jones expressed that a standout factor that differentiates these elite runners is that they show remarkable fatigue resistance.

This is because seem to know what their “critical speed” is and run just below this speed, thereby avoiding fatigue.

Eliud Kipchoge is an example of a runner with great fatigue resistance and was one of the participants of the study who ended up winning the marathon and breaking the two-hour barrier.

  • A Malawi court has ordered the immediate release of the Bushiris.
  • According to their lawyer, the magistrate found the arrest was unlawful.
  • The couple is wanted in South Africa in connection with a fraud and money laundering case, worth R102m.

A Malawi court has ordered the immediate release of wanted self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, lawyer Terrance Baloyi explained to News24 on Thursday.

Magistrate Viva Nyimba in his ruling said, among other things, the arrest by the Malawi Police Service was unlawful because it was not channelled through the Ministry of Homeland Security, according to Baloyi.

The pair, who are being represented by lawyer Wapona Kita, appeared before a Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe.

The Malawi State had requested a 30-day remand to allow room for the process of extradition.

The Bushiris handed themselves over to the Lilongwe police on Wednesday after a notice was issued by Interpol on Monday.

The couple recently allegedly fled South Africa, which would have broken bail conditions set in a fraud and money laundering case before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

Bail revoked

Bail has since been revoked.

They had previously been granted bail of R200 000 each on 4 November.

The Bushiris, Landiwe Ntlokwana, Zethu Mudolo and Willie Mudolo are facing charges of fraud, theft and money laundering

The couple allegedly arrived in Malawi last Wednesday, and then made an announcement via various social media platforms on Saturday.

Bushiri claimed he did not feel safe in South Africa and feared he would not be afforded a fair trial.

In addition, he also made several demands to the South African government, News24 reported.

The fraud and money laundering case continued in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

As a result of failing to appear, the Bushiris forfeited their property in Centurion and bail was revoked.

Proteas coach Mark Boucher admitted that he is still tinkering with his options for next year’s T20 World Cup when South Africa take on England next week.

The first of three T20s is scheduled to get underway at Newlands on Friday, 27 November.

This will be the Proteas’ first international match in eight months since the coronavirus pandemic halted the cricketing calendar across the globe.

Back-to-back T20 World Cup’s are expected in the next two years with India hosting in October 2021 and the rescheduled Australia World Cup now set to be staged in 2022.

The Proteas will be looking to redeem themselves at next year’s T20 World Cup after finishing in seventh-place at last year’s 50-Over tournament in England.

Boucher admitted that prior to the lockdown, he had a 15-man squad in mind but since the coronavirus hiatus, he reckons there’s a few spots up for grabs.

“We haven’t played cricket in some time. With regards to form and ageing of players, I actually haven’t gotten the 15 at the moment,” Boucher told reporters on Thursday.

“Let’s start with playing and I’ll work out certain positions that are solidified and maybe some that are open. Since there’s been no white-ball cricket being played in our country, I’d like to give everyone an open shot at trying to put their hands up.”

Boucher admitted that there is some clarity in certain positions but that there’s a lot of room for new talent to make their mark.

“Generally when you’re picking a World Cup squad, 80% sort of selects itself, it’s that 20% where there’s going to be tough decisions made,” said Boucher.

“We’ll select players for different conditions, we’ve got the opportunity now to look at different individuals.

“Some of the guys played a lot of cricket in the IPL and we’ve got to manage their workload. It’s quite an exciting time and it’s an opportunity to try some new faces with the process knowing that we need to win.”

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is capable of handling any issue that arise from the state capture inquiry, Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola said after former president Jacob Zuma defied a summons in leaving the commission on Thursday.

Zuma’s application for Zondo’s recusal was dismissed on Thursday morning.

After the ruling, advocate Paul Pretorius, head of the commission’s legal team, said Zuma now has to answer questions.

But advocate Muzi Sikhakhane, who represents the corruption-accused former president, said they would “excuse” themselves from the proceedings.

Zuma, who was summoned after playing cat-and-mouse with the inquiry, then left without Zondo’s permission.

“It is a pity that he has elected to leave without asking for permission,” Zondo said before adjourning the commission.

“The commission will reflect on the matters it needs to reflect on, but it is going to continue with its work,” Zondo said.

Later on Thursday, Lamola briefed the media regarding Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, where he was asked for comment about Zuma’s departure.

He said the government expects the commission to do its job. It is in the interest of all South Africans that it finalises its report on state capture.

The government believes Zondo is capable of handling any issue arising from the commission, he said.

“We leave all legalities in the capable hands of Judge Raymond Zondo,” he said.
