News24.com | Van Damme to Zille in epic twar over racist V&A Waterfront incident: ‘I don’t kowtow to bullies’
Former DA leader ignited a twar between her and DA communications spokesperson Phumzile van Damme on Sunday.
Twitter user @Alettaha was the spark that set the whole thing in motion after claiming that Van Damme was the aggressor in a “racist incident” that made headlines last week.
In the incident, Van Damme punched a young man “in self-defence”, after he came into her space and allegedly said “voetsek you black” and threw her phone on the ground.
Zille then replied to @Alettaha, saying: “It is hard, in these circumstances, to work out where the truth lies.”
Zille further said the people who were also involved in the incident might be too scared to come forward.
This set off the twar, with Van Damme responding.
And this is what followed:

Health24.com | ‘Lost wallet’ test reveals how honest people are – and the results may come as a surprise
If you tend to doubt the honesty of strangers, the results of a new study may come as a surprise: All around the globe, people are more likely to return a lost wallet if it’s loaded with cash.
In experiments done in 40 countries, researchers found that people were more likely to return a lost wallet to its owner if it contained a large amount of money, versus little to no money. The pattern held true in 38 of the 40 nations.
Surprising findings
Globally, 40% of people returned a “missing” wallet if it had no cash. That rose to 51% when it contained a small amount of money – equivalent to $13 (± R190).
But if the wallet had a heftier sum – about $94 (± R1350) – 72% of people returned it.
It all runs counter to the notion that people act from their own material interests. And the researchers said they themselves were surprised by the findings.
The results were “remarkably consistent” across countries, said researcher Christian Zund, of the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
What seems to be driving people’s good behaviour? Altruism plays a role, Zund said.
In three countries, the researchers ran a side experiment: Some wallets contained money and a key, while others had no key. It turned out that people were more likely to return the key-containing wallets – suggesting they were partly motivated by concern for the owner.
Great variation across countries
But self-image may also be critical, too. In addition to the real-world experiments, the researchers conducted surveys in several countries, asking people to imagine the lost-wallet scenario.
In general, they found, people thought that keeping a wallet with a large amount of money “felt like stealing”.
“People do tend to care about the welfare of others, and they also have an aversion to seeing themselves as a thief,” said lead researcher Alain Cohn, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The study, published in Science, involved teams of research assistants who fanned out across 355 cities – the five to eight largest cities in each of the 40 countries.
The assistants posed as good citizens who’d found a wallet, going into the reception areas of various institutions – banks, museums, hotels, post offices and courthouses – and handing over the wallet to an employee. Each wallet contained a business card with a phony name and email address. The researchers used those email addresses to track which wallets were reported found.
In the end, the overall reporting rate varied widely across countries – from 76% to only 14%. At the top were Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. China, Morocco, Peru, Kazakhstan and Kenya rounded out the bottom. (The United States stood in the middle of the pack.)
Valuable insights
However, nearly all countries showed the same pattern: People were more likely to return a wallet with a significant amount of money, versus little to no money.
Shaul Shalvi, of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, wrote an editorial published with the study.
Its insights are “very valuable”, he said. “This study tackles an important question about human honesty using a task that is relatively easy to control.”
The experiment did look at a specific scenario: what people do when they are handed a lost wallet at work. It’s possible, Shalvi said, the results would be different if the wallets were left on the sidewalk for anyone to pick up.
But that would have been a much less controlled setup, he noted.
Indeed, the researchers avoided the sidewalk scenario for that reason. “Maybe only dishonest people would pick the wallet up,” Cohn said. “Or maybe only honest people would.”
Overly pessimistic view of others
Shalvi said it’s not clear how well a person’s willingness to report a lost wallet predicts other, more complex forms of “civic honesty”. But, he added, there are reasons to believe it does.
“Returning a wallet is an action not forced by fear of punishment, so it may serve as a good predictor for one’s true nature,” Shalvi said. “Of course, whether someone who returns a wallet is also more likely to whistleblow in a corruption case is an open question.”
The study also suggests that many people are more cynical than they should be.
The researchers conducted two additional surveys – one of 279 economists and other “experts”, and one of nearly 300 Americans. In both, most respondents incorrectly predicted that people would be less likely to return a lost wallet loaded with cash.
According to Cohn, that suggests people often have an overly pessimistic view of others’ honesty.

Drama at Lords. Tahir believes he has taken a stunner out in the deep but Fakhar is not moving. Soft signal is not out which hasn’t improved Faf’s mood. Plenty of replays for the third umpire to check out and they all seem to suggest the ball might have touched the ground. Nothing conclusive to overturn the original call so not out remains.

News24.com | ‘We told them to fix the lifts’, says resident in Joburg building where woman died
A resident of two years in the Johannesburg building where a woman died allegedly because of a defective lift, says there had been malfunctions for a long period of time.
“The lift has been a constant problem there. It stops mid-floors. It would get stuck and then start moving again. It would stop and it would be in the middle of two floors. It would also get stuck in the basement. We told them to fix the lifts, saying it’s going to cause a problem,” Bea Campbell-Cloete told News24 on Sunday.

Campbell-Cloete rented an apartment on the 26th floor where a woman in her 40s died on Sunday – this after she was trapped in a lift at the 120 End Street High Rise building in Doornfontein in Johannesburg.
The cable allegedly snapped and shot up 26 floors. ER24 paramedics attempted to stabilise the woman; however, access was lifted because the lift was unstable.
Two other male passengers managed to escape the lift with one crawling free through the remaining gap between the top of the interior door and bottom of the lift door.
‘Three lifts not working’
Campbell-Cloete was in the process of moving furniture out when she came across the incident.
“When we turned into the road, we saw ambulances and the fire brigade. We hoped someone wasn’t hurt or mugged. We went up and got on the 26th floor and saw people everywhere. Everyone was in shock and could not believe this happened. Many said they would be moving out.”
She said that the building initially had good working lifts, a total of six, but that as recent as a few weeks ago, just three had been working.
“It tells you that there is a problem. Sometimes the lifts would keep going up and down stop between floors.”
One of the building supervisors, only identified as Solly, declined to comment. He further declined to refer News24 to any building management.

This Gym Is Under Fire for Sending Its Members a Horrifying Body-Shaming Email
Twitter is currently roasting Anytime Fitness for a promotional email the gym sent to its members, Yahoo Lifestyle reports.
The email, which was sent from the gym's Manchester, Connecticut location, encouraged members to "be comfortable in your skin." The message, however, had the opposite effect on recipients—namely, former gym member Mora Reinka.
Reinka, who hasn't gone to Anytime Fitness in two years, shared a photo of the email to her Twitter, saying how "horrified" she felt by its message. "I just don't even know where to begin," she wrote. And quite frankly, it's easy to see why.

The email starts innocently enough, painting a picture of the "warm days ahead."
"Shorts, bathing suits, flip flops. The smell of suntan lotion. And LOTS of pictures of you that will be posted online forever," begins the message. Then it takes an unexpectedly dark turn. "[That means] LOTS of sucking in, side turns, skinny arm posts and god forbid, a side pic while sitting down."
It doesn't end there. The email then urges members to "take your hand, and grab the excess you have on your waist (front/back/sides.)"

"Can you pinch it? Or can you grab it?" the email continues. "Well, I want to call it what it is…FAT." (Find out why America hates fat women.)
Reinka's photo of the email quickly went viral. Now, people across the board are sharing how this kind of messaging is both disappointing and dangerous.
"Oh. My. It's like an eating disorder sent out an email," wrote one Twitter user.
A UK-based mental health awareness platform, Mental Health TV, tweeted: "This is very disappointing to see. Gyms need to have better awareness of eating disorders and other mental health issues relating to body image. This is not appropriate to send to anybody."

Another user shared her own "horrible" experience at an Anytime Fitness gym: "I quit their gym a few months ago and one time I was in the gym for 30 mins and when I left one of the fitness instructors said to me, 'Where are you going? You've only been here for 20 minutes,'" she wrote.
Following the backlash, Anytime Fitness' national media director, Mark Daly came forward with an official apology.
"That is not the sort of message that Anytime Fitness supports or encourages," he said in a statement to Yahoo Lifestyle. "In fact, it is the exact opposite of how we coach Anytime Fitness franchisees to communicate with potential members. We pride ourselves on being supportive and encouraging—never shaming."
Daly added that he has since spoken with the franchise owner of the Connecticut gym to express his disappointment. "He apologized…and promised not to send similar messages to anyone," said Daly. "We will be re-training the owner of the gym to be supportive and encouraging in his messaging and his actions."

The man who sent the message, Shawn Pyron, apparently thought the message was funny. However, he told Yahoo Lifestyle that he now realizes body shaming is not a joke.
"I'm very sorry about the promotional message that I sent to Ms. Reinka and other former members of our gym," he wrote in a statement. "It was poor attempt at using humor as a motivation for people to lead healthy lifestyles. I realize now that the message was not funny and that it offended many people. I'm truly sorry. I've learned from all of this and I will not repeat the mistake."
We've said it before, and unfortunately, we'll have to say it again: Body shaming is not the way to get people to achieve their weight loss goals. In fact, telling someone to focus on their "flaws" and inadequacies often has the opposite effect on their overall health.
Thankfully, body-positivity and self-love movements have gained incredible traction in recent years. But incidents like this prove there is still a lot of work to be done.
