Film Editing Lecturer
As a Discipline Lecturer in Editing, Afda is looking for a committed and dedicated professional to lecture and provide support to undergraduate students. Our ideal candidate will need to be proficient in both Theory and Practice of Film Editing.
The position requires someone with drive and initiative who is able to motivate students and guide them into the world of Film Editing. A knowledge of appropriate software is essential for both disciplines. The candidate needs to demonstrate a willingness to embrace Afda’s unique pedagogy which is the basis of the interdisciplinary teaching at Afda. There is also a strong emphasis on cultural relevance within the teaching, and the need to help the students identify and develop a distinctive African voice to their productions. In this way, we hope to be able to contribute to nation building and build the foundations for a sustainable local film industry.
Key Duties:
- Continuous curriculum planning and content development for all undergraduate years of Editing
- Lecturing first, second and third-year degree students
- Conducting student consultations and reflective meetings
- Preparing content and lesson plans for each term
- Teach and oversee DCP creation for festivals
- Upload materials for online festivals.
- Oversee Post-production schedules for all three years.
- Maintain and archive productions on the Afda server
- Assessment registration for the term’s assessments
- Working with counter-parts in other Afda campuses to ensure parity across all campuses on term outcomes
- Attendance registers and class management administration
- Basic edit lab and server content maintenance
- Review and feedback of student productions
- Conducting student consultations and reflective meetings
- Preparing content and lesson plans for each term
- Preparing the assessment register for each term and conducting all marking to the accepted rubric.
- Adhering to and participating in the creation of parity across all campuses on term outcomes
- Keeping attendance registers and class management administration
- Timetable planning, including inter-discipline opportunities
- Attending relevant meetings
- Oversee and facilitate planning and parity for the post-production process for undergraduate productions
- Facilitate and perform audiovisual reproduction for the University and Marketing department
- Class mentor duties for third-year specifically facilitating the exit level productions, for on-line and theatrical film festivals within the confines of AFDA outcomes policies and DHET requirements.
Requirements and Personal Attributes:
- Relevant experience in the film and entertainment industry, preferably five years
- Relevant Honours/Masters degree in Film and/or Media Studies with specialisation in editing
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe Media Encoder and Avid Media Composer
- Basic knowledge of Da-Vinci Resolve, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop, Compressor
- Experience of an Apple-Mac work environment
- Knowledge of advanced Post Production pipelines and workflow procedures
- Advanced knowledge of various DSLR, HD, 2K and DCI post-production formats and various delivery platforms
- Ability to teach on-set Script Supervision procedures, protocols and etiquette
- Experience in Non-linear Editing techniques both on-line and off-line proxy editing
- Knowledge of story structure, film editing history, editing theory and academic writing
- Highly developed organizational skills including post-production scheduling across all post disciplines
- Initiative and problem solving

- Ability to work co-operatively with other teaching staff
