News24.com | EXCLUSIVE | Homeless Killings: ‘Night crawler’ a balaclava wearing, lone wolf
Two people who may have been attacked by the ‘night crawler’ suspected of killing homeless people in the Muckleneuk area of Tshwane, have told police their attacker was wearing a balaclava and attacked them during the evening while they were sleeping.
A high-level task team has been established to investigate the spate of murders of homeless people in the area after a fifth body was discovered.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters confirmed to News24 on Wednesday evening that the specialist team has been able to establish that two homeless men recently survived similar attacks in the area. The two men had not previously approached police about the attacks until now.
The men reported that their attacker was wearing a balaclava and attacked them during the evening while they were sleeping and that they were only attacked by one man.
While police have labelled the spate of murders as the work of a serial killer, they have called the suspect the nocturnal prowler.

Earlier on Wednesday, News24 spoke to one of the homeless men who resides in Magnolia park in Muckleneuk, Pretoria. He believes he may have been the first victim of the ‘night crawler’, after he was attacked in May.
The man, who declined to reveal his identity, believes he may have been one of the first victims, after waking up in the early hours of the morning in May, to a man violently stabbing him.
The man recounted his ordeal, saying the attack happened around 03:00, and that his attacker was wearing a black jacket with a hoodie, wielding a large knife.
“I was the first to be stabbed,” he claimed.
“I was sleeping, he was silent and just started stabbing me, he didn’t say anything.”
The man then managed to jump up and ran into the street screaming, his attacker then ran away.
“He was running like a ghost,” he explained, with the man being fast, and silent as he ran away.
The man doesn’t remember how he got to a nearby hospital, but said he was treated for several stab wounds on his left arm, stomach and knee in Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Tshwane.
When asked if he opened a case with the police, the man said he didn’t approach police because he thought it would be futile as he didn’t know his attacker.
He added that there was another man who was attacked in the area after him, who also managed to survive.
I don’t sleep alone anymore
The man, who works as a recycler now, says he is terrified of sleeping alone and that other homeless people have now opted to either leave the Muckleneuk area at night, or sleep in groups.
“[There are] very few people sleeping here, the ones that are staying are [sleeping] in a group now,” he told News24.
“Even me, now I don’t sleep alone.”

Another homeless man who sleeps in Magnolia Park said that if he isn’t given help, he might be the next to die.
The man, who also did not want to be named, could not understand why they were being targeted, as they did not have money or any valuable belongings.
He questioned whether the killer was a “sangoma” or “mentally disturbed”.

He also said that homeless people have now opted to sleep in groups.
“We are sleeping in groups… but when someone is approaching a lot of people no one will rise because they will be afraid for their life.
“No one will raise his head, no one can try to do something, because it’s night and we don’t have anything.”
“So even if someone is crying there, I cannot run and say I want to help, how can [I].”
We are all scared
Several other homeless men and people who work in the Muckleneuk area have said they are terrified that they may be next and that they have no means to defend themselves.
One street vendor said everyone in the area is scared, because they don’t know who or why people are being targeted and killed.
He said that a part of Magnolia Park was home to dozens of people, but since the murders started, most people have left the area in the evenings, finding other parks to sleep in.
The manager of Huckleberrys, Chris Letswalo said that since the news broke, the restaurant has also suffered with patrons opting to stay away.
They have also had a massive decline in people making bookings for functions at the restaurant in Magnolia Park.
Letswalo added that he has been with the restaurant for eight years and has never heard of a single murder in the area, until now.
Fifth body found
On Wednesday morning, police confirmed that a fifth body had been discovered at a bus stop near the Unisa main campus in Muckleneuk.

The first body was found almost three weeks ago in a veld near the Mears Park train station. Two more bodies were found in Magnolia Park on June 8 and 9. The fourth body was on a pavement on the corner of Justice Mohammed and Troye streets on Tuesday.
All five victims were found in different parts of Muckleneuk. Police have also confirmed that the five were homeless middle-aged males. They were all killed at night.
News24 also understands that all victims were either stabbed, suffered blunt force trauma from a heavy object or injuries inflicted in both manners. However, post-mortems conducted by the task team will conclusively identify the cause of death in each case.

News24.com | State opposes Henri van Breda’s Concourt appeal bid
The State is opposing triple axe murderer Henri van Breda’s bid to challenge his conviction and sentence in the Constitutional Court, stating that it is not in the interests of justice to grant leave to appeal.
In an affidavit opposing his application, prosecutor Megan Blows said there were no prospects of success on appeal. “All submissions made by [the] applicant in his founding affidavit were thoroughly considered by the trial court as is evident from the court’s comprehensive judgment,” added Blows.
“The trial court correctly convicted [the] applicant of the planned murders of his family… No substantial and compelling circumstances compelling the trial court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences were placed before the court.”
READ: Court ‘erred’ in convicting, sentencing Henri Van Breda – defence ConCourt papers
In May 2018, Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai gave Van Breda three life sentences for the murders of his parents and brother, 15 years for the attempted murder of his sister, and one year for obstructing the course of justice.
In the defence’s application for leave to appeal, Van Breda’s attorney, Lorinda van Niekerk, argued that Desai had made a number of incorrect factual findings on material aspects, had relied on hearsay evidence without alerting them prior to judgment, and attached little or no weight to the defence’s expert witnesses without justification.
While she said the appeal raised a constitutional issue, Blows said this aspect had already been decided upon by the Constitutional Court.
It was Van Breda’s fourth application for leave to appeal, having previously been denied by the Supreme Court of Appeal on two occasions, and the Western Cape High Court.
“It is submitted that the court a quo erred and misdirected itself by concluding that the proven facts are only consistent with a finding that the applicant was the person who attacked his family; and that the proven facts exclude as a reasonable inference, that the applicant’s exculpatory version is reasonably possibly true,” said Van Niekerk.
‘Shockingly excessive and inappropriate’
The defence also submitted that imposing life sentences was “shockingly excessive and inappropriate”.
But Blows differed in her affidavit.
“The horrendous facts of the matter speaks for themselves… It therefore cannot be argued that the sentences imposed are either shockingly excessive or inappropriate,” she said.
The State argued the high court correctly found that the evidence pointed to Van Breda attacking his family and that his version was not reasonably, possibly true.
Blows said the court did not make any incorrect factual findings on material aspects and thoroughly considered the evidence of the expert witnesses called by the defence.
“The trial court, upon a consideration of these pillars [of Van Breda’s case], found that the conviction of the applicant was inescapable and the only reasonable inference to be made. The court clearly did not convict the applicant on the basis of the DNA evidence.”
Desai delivered a “comprehensive and detailed judgment”, Blows said.
“Unlike [the] applicant, the trial court did not deal with the evidence on a piecemeal basis, but evaluated all the circumstantial evidence, in totality.”
She said an appeal court could only interfere where there had been a clear misdirection or where findings were obviously incorrect.
“In the matter at hand, there is no clear misdirection of findings that are patently incorrect.”

Health24.com | Is teen sexting a warning sign of other risky behaviours?
Parents who find a sex-based text on their teenager’s phone should be on the lookout for other problems in their child’s life, a new evidence review suggests.
Teens who share sexually explicit images are much more likely to be involved in other troubling activities, including unsafe sex, alcohol and drugs.
Troubling findings
“The kids who are sexting are engaging in a lot of other risky behaviours,” said senior researcher Sheri Madigan, a child development expert from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.
“We found that youths who were sexting were approximately four times more likely to be also engaging in sexual intercourse, five times more likely to have multiple sexual partners, and half as likely to be using contraception,” she continued.
Also, sexting teens were:
- Twice as likely to have symptoms of depression and anxiety.
- Two and a half times more likely to be smoking or engaging in delinquent behaviours like stealing or vandalism.
- More than three times as likely to be using alcohol or drugs.
But the findings are particularly troubling in light of a 2018 study led by Madigan that found one out of four teens is receiving sexts, and one out of seven is sending them.
Other risky behaviours
Results from the new review line up with what is already known about teens and sexting, said Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center at Florida Atlantic University.
“Many risky behaviours among youth tend to occur in a constellation,” he said. “If a teen experiments with one risky behaviour, that teen typically has experience with other risky behaviours.”
For this study, Madigan and her colleagues collected and combined data from 23 previous studies on sexting, involving nearly 42 000 teenagers.
They found significant links between sexting and sexual activity, risky sexual behaviour, symptoms of mood disorders, drug and alcohol use, smoking and delinquency.
Further, they found that associations between sexting and either sexual behaviour or mood disorders were stronger in younger adolescents, compared to those in their later teens.
It’s not clear whether sexting leads to these behaviours, or whether kids inclined to take risks are also more likely to sext, the researchers added. They noted the findings could not prove causation; it only showed an association.
What parents should do
It’s very possible that sexting is a gateway that could lead to more experimentation with sex, Madigan said.
“I think sometimes sexting is an initiation into greater sexual behaviour,” she said. “Sometimes kids use sexting as a starting point. People have called it the modern-day version of flirting.”
But other research also has found that when teens are sexting within the confines of a committed relationship, they are not more likely to be engaging in substance abuse and other risk-taking activities, Madigan added.
Those associations are more often found in “youth who are sexting as a method of flirting or sexting in a more casual way”, she said.
So what should parents do?
Hazing and cyberbullying expert Susan Lipkins said the “pat answer” is to remind children that anything they share over the internet is out of their control and could be used against them.
Kids will do what they want
Parents should start teaching their kids about privacy and consent as early as possible, even before they have a phone, she and Madigan advised.
Such conversations should include discussion of “what-if” scenarios, Madigan said: What if someone sends you a photo? What if you’re asked to send a nude of yourself? What if someone tries to coerce you into sexting? What if you share a nude with a boyfriend or girlfriend and then you break up?
“But the truth is, the kids will learn all that, they will memorise it and repeat it back to you, and then they will do whatever they want,” said Lipkins, a psychologist in Port Washington, New York.
The best thing adults can do is create a system for reporting sexts and other cyberbullying behaviour, one that is anonymous and allows for verification of complaints, she said.
Otherwise, it’s really in the hands of the teens themselves, she added.
“The kids themselves have to decide they don’t want to participate,” Lipkins said. “‘We’re not going to pass that photo along. No, I don’t want it on my device. No, I don’t want to get in trouble for having it. No, it is inappropriate, it is disrespectful to whomever, and I’m not going to participate in this behaviour.’ When they can say that and protect each other and themselves, that’s when it’s going to end.”
The new report was published in JAMA Pediatrics.
