Several people found guilty of killing police officers in the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal between 2012 and 2017 have been handed hefty prison sentences for their crimes.
Nine police killers were sentenced to a combined nine life sentences while two have been given a total of 32 years imprisonment.
According to the national Police Commissioner’s office, six accused were recently convicted of killing Eastern Cape Warrant Officer Mawethu Singana and a motorist in 2012.
Singana had responded to an armed robbery in progress in Ngqeleni near Mthatha in July 2012, and, upon pursuing the suspects, a shootout ensued, killing Singana and one other suspect.
“The accused went on to rob the police of their rifle and pistol, and tried to hijack a woman who was driving by. Upon resistance the accused shot and killed the woman before fleeing the scene,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Brenda Muridili.
The accused, Welcome Mfiki, Nhlanhla Mvoko, Zwelithini Gibeni, Sinethemba Dangazele, Sonwabile Makhonco and Menzi Zekani, were sentenced on June 7 by the Mthatha High Court to three life sentences each for the murders; that of Sinanga, a community member and their accomplice who died at the scene.
They were sentenced to a further 15 years for each remaining 37 counts, culminating into a combined 555 years imprisonment. The sentences will not run concurrently.
Off duty cops
“The other three police officers that were killed are Warrant Officer Z Nyakaza, Warrant Officer TN Mkhize and Sergeant KG Lefosa.
Nyakaza was killed in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape, while off duty in October 2016. Two of his killers were found guilty; one was sentenced to life imprisonment while the second accused was given 20 years in prison,” Muridili said.
Mkhize was stabbed to death in Umzinto, KZN by unknown suspects in October 2017. Both accused were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Lefosa on the other hand was killed in Bloemspruit, Free State in April 2017 while off duty.
“The accused was sentenced to 12 years in prison,” said Muridili.
The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole has welcomed the sentences given to the accused.
“I will always call upon our citizens to work together with the police to root out police killers from our communities. No murder of any law abiding citizens is justifiable and the killing of those mandated by the Constitution of the Republic to ensure safety and security, equates to an attack on the State. We welcome any form of admonishment that will serve as a deterrent for those that have ill intentions of killing police officers,” said Sitole.
Cape Town – Following their dramatic 12-9 victory over the Stormers on Saturday at Newlands, Sharks coach Robert du Preez has selected a 27-man squad for Saturday’s Super Rugby quarter-final clash with the Brumbies in Canberra.
Kick-off is at 12:05 SA time.
The team departed for Australia on Sunday evening without “Beast” Mtawarira who will not make the trip after his withdrawal with a knee niggle from the Stormers match.
Philip van der Walt and Jean-Luc du Preez have also not yet been passed fit to play, although Craig Burden has been included after picking up a hamstring tweak that ruled him out of Saturday’s match.
Further good news is the inclusion of Curwin Bosch who also missed the Stormers game, but is now fully fit.
“The Stormers are a fantastic side and the game could have gone either way,” said Du Preez following the team’s win that secured a top eight finish and a place in the playoffs in a drama-filled final weekend of Super Rugby action.
“The game was in the balance all the way to the final hooter, but I thought the character the boys showed was tremendous and that vindicated everything this team is about on attack and defence.
“We were dominant the whole game and scored two tries. But rugby is a cruel game, a game of moments.”
Sharks touring squad:
Forwards (15)
Juan Schoeman, Mzamo Majola, Kerron van Vuuren, Craig Burden, Cullen Collopy, Coenie Oosthuizen, Thomas du Toit, John-Hubert Meyer, Ruben van Heerden, Gideon Koegelenberg, Hyron Andrews, Daniel du Preez, Jacques Vermeulen, Tyler Paul, Luke Stringer
Backs (12)
Louis Schreuder (captain), Cameron Wright, Robert du Preez, Curwin Bosch, Makazole Mapimpi, Andre Esterhuizen, Jeremy Ward, Lukhanyo Am, Kobus van Wyk, S’bu Nkosi, Aphelele Fassi, Rhyno Smith
EFF leader Julius Malema has responded to a video in which the party’s secretary general, Gordrich Gardee was involved in a punch-up at the party’s headquarters with a former member, saying: “I would have done worse than what the SG (secretary general) did.”
“The SG is performing his revolutionary duty, to defend the revolution by protecting the office of the revolution,” said Malema while addressing Youth Day celebrations at the Fort Hare University in Alice on Sunday afternoon.
In the video, which emerged this week, Gardee is seen arriving at the party’s headquarters and then getting into a heated exchange with two party members.
The exchange then turns physical. The incident occurred in 2018.
‘Provocative’
In defending his actions, Gardee previously told News24 that Abednego Mathole, better known as Msholozi in the EFF, was “just being provocative”.
“Msholozi has been declared a persona non-grata at the EFF premises. It’s just very provocative for him to even walk into our premises,” Gardee said.
Mathole was kicked out of the party as a result of the altercation.
“It was so painful for us, being told we are not members cause we assaulted SG. We never complained anywhere, never laid charges and said we were assaulted. We never spoke to journalists. We thought of Mokone. It would embarrass Mokone (referring to Malema),” Mathole told News24.
‘Meet your maker’
“We are building a revolutionary party, not a Student Christian Organisation (SCO),” Malema told those gathered at the packed Alice Campus of the university.
Malema continued: “If that video embarrasses you, go to SCO.”
“I would have done worse than what the SG did for that office of the EFF is not a playground… we’ll make you meet your maker, quickly,” Malema said.
This is not the first time an EFF leader has been linked to a violent incident.
Deputy president Floyd Shivambu was caught throttling a journalist on the grounds of Parliament last year, and one its MPs, Marshall Dlamini, is currently facing charges of assault after slapping a police officer following the State of the Nation Address in February.
Is that second serving of steak or extra strip of bacon worth shaving time off your life?
That’s a question researchers want you to ponder, because their new study finds the more red and processed meat you eat, the greater the odds of cutting your life short.
Lower risk of mortality
People who increased their red meat intake by just half a serving a day boosted their risk of dying over the next eight years by 10%, the study authors said.
And the type of meat made a difference, the investigators found. Eating a half serving more of processed meats like hot dogs and salami was tied to a 13% higher risk of dying early, while more unprocessed meat increased the risk 9%.
“When people reduce their consumption of red meat and add other sources of protein, they have a lower risk of mortality,” said lead researcher Dr Frank Hu.
Hu is chair of the nutrition department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.
The good news: Cutting down on red meat and adding vegetables, eggs, dairy, seeds, whole grains, nuts, fish and chicken to your diet will add years to your life, he said.
The study found that replacing one serving of red meat with fish every day over eight years was tied to a 17% lower risk of death over the next eight years.
Lower meat consumption
“We also know that red meat production has a significant environmental impact,” Hu said. “To improve both human health and the environment, it’s important to adopt a healthy diet that emphasises less meat consumption.”
For the study, Hu and his colleagues collected data on nearly 54 000 women who took part in the Nurses’ Health Study and almost 28 000 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, starting in 1986.
The researchers looked at meat intake over eight years and the risk of dying in the following eight years.
Eating more red meat was tied to a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and neurodegenerative disease, the findings showed.
The risk remained for all participants regardless of age, physical activity, dietary quality, smoking or alcohol.
Evidence has shown that consuming red and processed meat increases the risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers, Hu said.
A more plant-based diet
The life-shortening effect of red meat may be due to increased cholesterol, iron, preservatives and cancer-causing compounds that are produced when meat is cooked at high temperatures, he noted.
In addition, red meat has been tied to certain bacteria in the gut that might increase the odds for atherosclerosis, Hu said.
Despite the evidence, some people still cling to the idea that humans are meant to eat meat, said Samantha Heller, a senior clinical nutritionist at NYU Langone Medical Center, in New York City.
“Dismayed meat eaters say that humans are born carnivores and that meat is the only good source of protein, neither of which is necessarily true,” Heller noted.
The human body is not designed to withstand the large portions and long-term consumption of meat seen in developed countries, she explained. It doesn’t matter if the animal is grass-fed or the meat is organic.
“One can easily meet their protein needs with a more plant-based diet, consuming foods such as nuts, legumes, grains, vegetables and seeds,” she suggested.
Confounding factors
“Eating more plant foods and fewer foods from animals helps to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases and mortality,” Heller said.
A spokesperson for the beef industry disagreed with that assessment.
“Beef provides high-quality protein and nutrients essential to growth and strength from infancy through our later years,” said Shalene McNeill, executive director of human nutrition research of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
McNeill said the study had limitations. It looked at the diets of health professionals from more than 20 years ago, “who were eating nearly twice the amount of red meat eaten on average today,” she noted.
“Additionally, study participants whose red meat intake was unstable also had lower levels of physical activity and were more likely to smoke,” McNeill said.
“These confounding factors make it impossible to show cause and effect when it comes to eating red meat and health outcomes,” McNeill added.
