Pretoria, 8 June 2019 – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs officers intercepted a 74 year old wheelchair bound female traveller with almost R500 000 worth of heroin – neatly concealed in false compartments in her handbag at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday, 6 June 2019.
The traveller was destined for a Central European country at the time of the interception. Upon physical inspection of her hand luggage, a powdery substance was discovered. A drug test was administered, and the contents tested positive for heroin.
Customs registered a criminal case at the local police station for drug possession and attempted smuggling. The suspect was then arrested, pending a court appearance on the charges.
SARS Customs remains appreciative of the constructive collaboration between its officers, South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence and other law enforcement agencies at ORTIA, which continues to yield positive results in the fight against drug smuggling, said Customs Executive: Mohamed Ally.

Exercise can be just as polarizing as diet, with one camp claiming steady-state cardio is best for weight loss, while others swear by intense intervals of, say, weight lifting. Thankfully our girl Jillian Michaels is here to clear things up for Crossfitters and power walkers alike.
“The best kind of workout is whatever you show up for, really!” Michaels said. “Whatever gets you out of bed in the morning is ultimately going to be the most effective for whatever your goals are.”
Michaels herself aims to work out four times each week, and loves fitness that allows for measurable progress. While she admits to being extremely inflexible, Michaels says she is really into yoga right now as it feels rewarding to master each new position and see her progress visually.
As long as she can fit in at least 20-30 minutes of hard work in those four days each week, whether it’s a quick HIIT session in the middle of the afternoon or an early morning date with the gym, she can feel good about her fitness. And we know she’s not sitting at home watching TV the rest of the day—Michaels stays active as a mom, entrepreneur, speaker and activist, so she’s getting all those steps (or more) in. And simply staying active throughout the day burns more calories than you’d think!
Our favorite trainer does have some advice, however. If you’re looking for fast results to lose weight or build muscle tone, Michaels advises regularly switching up your workout in terms of reps, weight, intensity and even the type of exercise you’re doing to reap the full benefits. For example, if you’re a runner, try cross-training twice a week with a spin class or at-home circuit workout, and you’re likely to see some major running gains even though you’re doing it less.
Michaels is a big fan of high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, specifically for quick results. And she loves functional bodyweight moves like push-ups and squats that work several different muscle groups at a time. Plus, she says you should aim to get that heart rate up to 80-85% capacity and high-intensity intervals are sure to get you there!
If you’re struggling to find the right workout for you or are just looking to mix up your weekly regimen, check out Michaels’ health app—My Fitness by Jillian Michaels—for access to dozens of different workouts designed by Michaels herself. Whether you want to increase your flexibility and lower your stress with yoga or sweat it out with kickboxing, this app gives you the perfect workout at your fingertips. You’ll be reaching your goals in no time!

No parent wants their child to suffer a dog bite, and new research offers some guidance on which dogs are the riskiest around young kids.
The body size and head shape of dogs affect the bite and injury risk they pose, the researchers found.
Weight and head shape
For the study, the investigators examined 15 years of visits for facial dog bites at two emergency departments, and more than 45 years of data from different dog bite studies.
“Because we often didn’t know what type of dog was involved in these incidents, we looked at things like weight and head shape,” explained study author Dr Garth Essig, an otolaryngologist at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, in Columbus.
“We wanted to provide families with data to help them determine the risk to their children and inform them on which types of dogs do well in households with kids,” Essig explained in a medical centre news release.
Certain dog breeds are known to be more likely to bite and to cause more serious injuries, but the breed was unknown in about 60% of dog bite cases analysed by the researchers.
Bite injuries from pit bulls were the most frequent and most severe, followed by mixed-breed dogs and German shepherds, the findings showed.
The researchers also identified the physical traits of dogs that pose a higher bite and injury risk.
Children more at risk
For example, dogs weighing more than 30kg and those with more of a square-shaped head – such as a chow chow or pug – were more likely to bite and cause serious injury.
Each year in the United States, nearly five million people suffer dog bites, and children have a much higher risk than adults.
Children should be taught how to safely interact with dogs, the study authors said.
Meghan Herron is an associate professor of clinical services at Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She explained that “people often think that leaning forward and reaching out their hand for the dog to smell is the right thing to do, but in reality that can actually be threatening to the dog”.
Herron suggested that, “instead, ask the dog owner for permission to pet their dog, then turn to the side, crouch down on your knees, pat your leg and let the dog come to you.”
The study findings were published recently in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology.
