News24.com | Dog found with necklace, ‘engagement’ ring stumps Capetonians – but there’s a ‘pretty’ simple explanation
It’s not every day that you come across a dog adorned with seemingly valuable jewellery on the street.
So when a puppy was found tied to a pole in Milnerton this week, wearing a pendant necklace and an engagement ring attached to its collar, Capetonians scratched their heads in wonder.
It was not long before they came up with all sorts of theories on Cheryl-Lyn’s Rescue Organisation Facebook page, where photos of the well looked-after pooch were posted.
Many thought that it was the sign of a relationship hitting the rocks.
“Maybe they broke up and she gave the ring back… And he’s dumped her dog and the ring… Who knows… very sad this,” said one woman.
Another said: “So strange. Maybe a relationship squabble and girlfriend wanted to make a statement to bf by dumping his dog with jewellery he gave her . Really wierd [sic].”
A few thought it was a proposal gone wrong.
Someone suggested a man had perhaps tried to propose using their beloved dog but “something happened to them en route”, while another said: “Gosh. All I can picture is a dude bringing his girlfriend to that spot to surprise her with a puppy and a proposal and pupper is gone!”
On the back of depressing news about the GDP shrinking, it was inevitable that some would think the economy was to blame.
“I must be honest – I won’t be surprised if this doggie comes from a very loving home, but they are unable to care for it. So instead of taking it to a shelter, they tie it up hoping a good person will cross its path,” one woman said. “So the jewelry was placed on the dog, that whom ever finds the dog will take care of it. Jewelry can be sold in order to buy dog food… Sjoe… It’s so sad what ever the story might be.”
Other wild theories included themes of crime and even suicide.
But the truth turned out to be far simpler.

Rescue organisation owner Cheryl-Lyn Potgieter told News24 that it subsequently emerged the dog belonged to a woman living on the street.
While it looked valuable, the items were costume jewellery.
“She said she just wanted her dog to look pretty.”
Potgieter said one man had phoned to claim that it was his wife’s ring that was stolen in Milnerton but he couldn’t produce photos.
She hoped that people would pay as much attention, or even more, to the many cases of animal cruelty that she dealt with every day in the Table View area.

News24.com | Farmer’s chilling words to his wife before robbery: ‘They’re coming’
“They’re coming!”
These were the chilling words that a Stellenbosch protea farmer shouted to his wife while doing a security check after hearing that a farmer in the region had been shot dead.
“It’s devastating,” an emotional Gerald Knight told News24 about being robbed hours after Louiesenhof vintner Stefan Smit was murdered.
“We’ve lived here for 25 years and right now, I feel like just leaving,” said Knight.
However, he has his protea plantation to look after, even if he is in terrible pain from the broken ribs he sustained during the robbery.
The Knights were ambushed by three robbers on Sunday night while doing a safety check following an alarming WhatsApp group message about Smit’s murder.
“The WhatsApp message told us to just close everything,” said Knight.
He then went to check if the back door was closed, and as he rounded a corner, he caught sight of somebody through the window.
“I screamed at Marie. I said, ‘They’re coming.'”
Horror
Taking deep breaths in between relating the horror that unfolded, Knight said two men broke their burglar bars with a crowbar and attempted to enter the house.
“I actually stopped them from coming in because I didn’t know where in the house my wife was.
“Then, he [one of the robbers] entered with a gun. And as he came in, he knocked me across the room into the kitchen cupboard. That’s when I broke my ribs.”
He was hit on the leg by one of the men who was demanding to know where his watch was.
“I have not worn a watch for 25 years,” he continued.
The second robber ran through the house to find his wife who had by then locked herself and their dogs in the “panic room”.
The couple used to breed Dobermanns.
Knight is convinced that their dogs would have been shot dead if they had let them out.
His wife activated the panic button just as a third robber tried to get in.
Knight said they took a 32-inch television set, a camera lens that was on the kitchen counter, cellphones and his wallet.
“They were literally in and out in five minutes. It was absolutely horrible.”
Their security company and the police arrived shortly afterward.
“The police were fantastic,” said Knight.
Earlier, Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel André Traut said investigations were ongoing into the Louiesenhof murder as well as a robbery at the Glen Gall Farm in Klapmuts outside Stellenbosch on Tuesday morning.
In that incident, a woman and children were robbed.
At Louiesenhof, the Smit family trust recently concluded the sale of a portion of land on Watergang to the Stellenbosch municipality for R45m after it was occupied by a group of backyarders who renamed it Azania. The deal is still in the transfer stage.
Farmers in the region are jittery after the murder and robberies, which happened soon after Bonnievale wine farmer Tool Wessels was killed and his wife, Liezel, was seriously injured in May.

Condemnation of the attacks and sympathy for the victims have come from all quarters, ranging from farmers associations and political parties to farmworkers’ association.
Vinpro and AgriSA have appealed to President Cyril Ramaphosa to take strong action against attacks on the agricultural sector and improve rural safety.
Louiesenhof is ironically next door to Beyerskloof, which has hosted meetings between presidents and farmers, most recently Ramaphosa.
Vinpro spokesperson Wanda Augustyn said: “As can be expected, the mood following the attacks is sombre.
“From Vinpro’s side, we are calling on wine-farming communities to be vigilant with regards to their own security and work together by becoming involved in policing or safety initiatives in their areas.”
Western Cape safety and agriculture MECs Albert Fritz and Ivan Meyer said they would urgently take up the matter with the police and the National Prosecuting Authority, adding that they would also start working on extra rural safety measures.
In the meantime, Knight said they had not gone for trauma counselling, adding that he would prefer to work through it himself. However, they are receiving good support from their family.

Health24.com | US watchdog takes hard look at CBD
The US Food and Drug Administration took a good look at the safety and effectiveness of CBD products on Friday, as it weighs how to best regulate the hemp-derived compound going forward.
During a public hearing that stretched for hours, the agency heard testimony from people on all sides of the issue.
Explosion of interest
In opening the hearing, FDA Acting Commissioner Dr Ned Sharpless said, “critical questions remain about the safety” of the products, CNN reported.
“While we have seen an explosion of interest in products containing CBD, there is still much that we don’t know,” Sharpless added.
To say the market for CBD products has exploded in the past year would be an understatement.
Everything from oils to gummies to pills, creams and ointments are now for sale at supermarkets and specialty chains. You can even get massages infused with CBD, or cosmetics laced with the drug.
All of these products contain cannabidiol but not THC, the ingredient in pot that provides a “high”.
CBD products have swamped the market not because of any new medical evidence, but because of a change in federal law.
What do scientists really know?
Late last year, Congress passed a farm bill that lifted a decades-old ban on growing hemp. As long as the plant contains less than 0.3% THC, hemp can be grown legally anywhere in the United States by licensed farmers.
The bill specifically said the US Drug Enforcement Administration cannot regulate hemp products like CBD. So, it’s now up to the FDA to manage the CBD craze.
But what do scientists really know about the health benefits and risks of CBD?
Precious little, experts say, and consumers should take care that they aren’t wasting their money.
“You have a flood of CBD products that are coming from hemp that are going out onto the market, and you’ve got all sorts of claims being made about those from people who are trying to sell them,” said Timothy Welty, chair of the department of clinical sciences at Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, in Des Moines, Iowa.
The flood of CBD products has become so overwhelming that the FDA recently stepped into the fray.
Rare forms of epilepsy
The agency has whipped out a flurry of warning letters to companies marketing CBD products, telling them to stop making unfounded health claims for the substance.
Companies have falsely claimed that CBD can stop cancer cells, slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, ease nerve pain and fibromyalgia, and curb withdrawal symptoms for people undergoing substance abuse treatment, the FDA letters state.
To date, there’s only one use for CBD that has significant scientific evidence behind it – curbing the symptoms of rare forms of epilepsy.
The FDA last year approved the drug Epidiolex to treat two forms of childhood epilepsy. The medical evidence has shown that the highly purified CBD in Epidiolex can ease seizures.
For the rest of CBD’s potential uses, there is simply too little evidence to make a firm conclusion.
The next potential medical use for CBD could be for the symptoms of anxiety disorder, said Welty and Yasmin Hurd, chair of translational neuroscience and director of the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai, in New York City.
May decrease anxiety
Clinical trials suggest that CBD could help treat anxiety, but Welty feels there needs to be more study. Hurd is slightly more convinced, but agrees more study is needed.
“There is published evidence that CBD does decrease anxiety,” Hurd said. “That’s another indication where I can say I can believe the data; however, we still don’t know the dosing regimen that would be effective for anxiety. Those are studies that are ongoing.”
Other uses – as an anti-inflammatory, an aid for substance withdrawal, a sleep aid, a pain reliever – haven’t been conclusively proven.
In some cases, the evidence runs counter to what people might suspect.
There’s not much reason to believe CBD would be an effective means of pain relief, said Dr Ajay Wasan, vice chair for pain medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
“If you think of it as a medicine, it would be a weak analgesic,” Wasan said. “It’s really the THC component of medical marijuana which is the compound that gives you pain relief,” he explained.
Purity of content
“I’ve been surprised how much CBD has taken off and exploded with very little data,” Wasan said. “Most of the other herbal supplements, there are at least some studies on it before it becomes really popular. But for this, I haven’t seen anything.”
The bottom line, researchers said, is that people who want to try CBD for one reason or another should talk with their doctor first.
Besides that, consumers might consider buying CBD products from a state-run programme. Some states like Iowa have established such programmes to make CBD available medicinally, Welty said.
“Those products are more reliable, because they have a system to monitor the purity of content,” Welty said. “You’re a little more sure that you’re getting what you’re paying for.”
Welty is much less sure of the “artisanal products” containing CBD that are available in stores and dispensaries, and for good reason – studies have shown that most of these products fail tests for content and purity.
“The CBD products that come through that route, there’s essentially no control, and you as a consumer have no way to know what you’re getting,” Welty said.

Sport24.co.za | As it happened: India cruise to victory as Proteas remain winless at CWC
THAT’S A WRAP!
Thank you for joining Sport24’s live coverage of the Proteas v India Cricket World Cup clash. We apologise for the result but what can we do?
Stay tuned to our website, as Sport24’s own Lloyd Burnard is at the Rose Bowl and will be giving you ALL the reaction from this match. What will the repercussions be for the Proteas now? Who’s to blame for this dismal start?
The next Proteas match will take place on Monday, June 10 against the West Indies (11:30 SA time).
Tomorrow’s match sees Australia face the West Indies (11:30 SA time)
FAF AFTER MATCH:
Faf du Plessis reckons that if Ngidi or Steyn were available, they would’ve bowled first.
Du Plessis reveals that the Proteas camp is “hurting and trying to make sure we keep fighting, but we’re making mistakes all the time”.
ANY POSITIVES FOR THE PROTEAS?
The tail wagged a bit with handy contributions from Chris Morris (42), Andile Phehlukwayo (34) and Kagiso Rabada (31).
From the bowling side, seam was the win today!
Rabada produced best figures of 2 for 39 in his 10 overs (which included a maiden).
Morris, who bowled THREE maidens, ended on 1 for 36 in his 10 with an economy rate of 3.60.
MAN OF THE MATCH:
Rohit Sharma for his unbeaten 122 off 144 balls, which included 13 fours and 2 sixes.
WORST SA START
This is South Africa’s worst start in the Cricket World Cup ever after suffering their third consecutive loss for the first time.
Despite the wicket, it was an expensive over from Morris with 10 coming from it.
India are 223/4 after 47 overs.
Chris Morris comes with the breakthrough, Dhoni top edges and the ball goes high up in the air.
Morris calls for it and catches it as he falls to the ground. A small relief for the Proteas.
Dhoni departs for 34 off 46 balls (2 fours).
India are 213/4 in 26.1 overs.
The Proteas need to have a hard look at themselves after this match.
Yes, it was always going to be a stretch beating India, but losing to them in this fashion, it’s just poor, just poor.
44 overs gone, India are 198/3.
Needing just 30 more runs for victory.
And to make matters worse, Rohit Sharma hits the next ball for a boundary…
As a South African, this is so frustrating!
DROPPED!
Rabada comes in hard and Sharma top edges high in the air and to much dismay, David Miller drops a sitter!
Rabada cannot believe it and neither can we!
This is unbelievable!!!!!
Rohit Sharma dropped at 107!
DEFEAT LOOMING
Runs are flowing here at the Rose Bowl for India as the world No 2 ODI side are taking on the South African bowlers.
An expensive over by Shamsi comes to end (16).
India are 193/3 after 43
24 overs gone, India 179/3
Require 49 runs off 48 balls.
With that 100 from Rohit Sharma, he goes past India great Sourav Ganguly as India’s all-time Top century makers.
On the list includes:
1. Sachin Tendulkar – 49 100s
2. Virat Kohli 41 100s
3. Rohit Sharma 23 100s
4. Sourav Ganguly 22 100s
5. Shikhar Dhawan 16 100s
100 for Rohit Sharma!
What a matured knock from the Indian opening batsman. He has gotten to his 23rd century in 128 balls (10 fours and 2 sixes).
He is leading his side to a comfortable victory at the Rose Bowl.
India are 175/3 in 40.4 overs.
Dale Steyn’s replacement, Beuran Hendricks has arrived in England!
Steyn was ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a second shoulder injury.
10 more overs left!
India need 58 more runs to win with 7 wickets in hand.
Rassie van der Dussen is reportedly off the field with a groin strain, however, it is precautionary and nothing serious.
Aiden Markram is the substitute fielder.
DID YOU KNOW?
South Africa have NEVER lost three consecutive Cricket World Cup matches.
UNFILLED SEATS?
Former England captain Michael Vaughan bemoaned the number of empty seats at the Cricket World Cup match between India and South Africa.
Thoughts are that the Proteas just need to pick up the crucial wickets of Rohit and Dhoni to put India on the back foot.
But it’s easier said than done…
36 overs gone, India are 154/3
India need 74 to win from 84 balls.
India are 145/3 after 34 overs.
They still require 83 from 96 balls.
LACKLUSTRE FIELDING
The Proteas are missing the mark with their fielding, there is just no urgency.
A mis-communication between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma sees both batsmen in the middle of the pitch and sub-fielder Aiden Markram slowly retrieves the ball at square leg.
An easy single is given, which is the last thing SA want.
Rabada provides the much-needed breakthrough for the Proteas as Rahul pops the ball straight to mid-off and in the safe hands of the Proteas skipper.
Rahul departs for 26 off 24 balls (2 fours).
India 139/3 in 31.3 overs.
ROHIT ON THE ATTACK!
Rohit Sharma is smashing the South African bowlers to all parts of the ground. The required run-rate is below 5 and India are closing in on their first win of the World Cup.
Rohit 83*, Rahul 26*
India 139/2 from 31 overs
Eight runs coming from Tahir’s over.
India are 123/2 after 29 overs.
Needing 105 runs in 21 overs!
