Shimmy Into Shape: Burn Calories With Belly Dancing
Belly dancing classes have long been staples at community centers, but they've recently begun to shake their way into the mainstream. Major health club chains like Crunch, New York Health & Racquet, and 24-Hour Fitness now offer their own versions, giving the Middle Eastern dance a fitness twist.
The classes still embrace the “love your body no matter what” mind-set and celebration of femininity typical of traditional classes. They're also still set to Arabic music (some dancers even wear silky hip-wraps embellished with dangling gold coins, though theyre not required).
But they've traded the customary stop-and-go format for a nonstop, heart-pumping cardio workout. As a result, you tone and whittle your middle while burning up to an impressive 350 calories in a 60-minute class.
You can try your handand hipsat this new breed of belly dancing at home, too, thanks to the many books and DVDs that have come out during the past couple of years. Either way, fitness belly dancing is worth a try, especially if your workout routine needs a little shaking up.

Two people were killed and three others injured in a suspected political killing in the Newcastle CBD in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
A businessman, 63-year-old Buthanani Golden Shange, and his friend, former 47-year-old school principal Martin Nkosenhle Sithole, were standing in front of Shange’s shop when unknown gunmen shot at them, police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.
“Both Mr Shange and Mr Sithole were killed while three bystanders were wounded. The wounded are in hospital receiving medical attention,” he said on Monday.

“While the motive of the attack is not conclusive at this stage, it has been decided that the task team investigating political killings take over this investigation,” Naidoo said.
Police are investigating two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Naidoo appealed to the public to come forward with information about the attack or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
“Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with the strictest confidence.”
Sport24.co.za | CONFIRMED: ASA to appeal Caster Semenya testosterone ruling
Cape Town – Athletics South Africa (ASA) will appeal the court decision forcing Caster Semenya to take medication to lower her natural levels of testosterone.
This comes after the Court for Arbitration of Sport (CAS) approved the ruling from the IAAF that female athletes in races between 800m and a mile gain an unfair advantage from having elevated levels of testosterone.
The ruling directly impacts Semenya, who is a double Olympic champion in the 800m.
ASA had until the end of May to decide if they would appeal the decision, and it was confirmed on Monday that they would be moving ahead with that process.
In the appeal, ASA has requested the recusal of two of the arbitrators who had worked on the initial hearing while the scientific findings presented in the case have also been questioned.
According to a statement from the department of sport and recreation, the appeal was based on the following:
1) ASA applied for recusal of two of the arbitrators who it felt they were conflicted since they have handled the earlier case of the Indian sprinter, Dutee Chand as Caster was also going to be an affected athlete.
2) The strength of scientific, medical and legal case we presented, we believe, the outcome is inconceivable on the fact. The facts before court and the outcome do not match.
3) The pertinent legal questions that the court should have addressed we not addressed. The court simply gave the unfettered latitude to the IAAF to do as it pleases. For instance, it has not been answered as to how the IAAF will implement the regulations and how ethical issues will be addressed.
