DA Gauteng premier candidate Solly Msimanga plans to lay a criminal complaint against the ANC on Sunday morning, alleging the party is behind the violent protests that have gripped Alexandra since Wednesday.
So far, leaders of the Alexandra total-shutdown movement have indicated that they are suspending their protests until the early hours of Monday morning. They say their next target is Sandton, which is one of the country’s most affluent suburbs and where the Johannesburg Stock Exchange is situated.
Speaker after speaker on Friday, during a public meeting, vowed that barricading and burning tyres in the streets of Alexandra had yielded no results. They all agreed that residents of Sandton and its neighbouring suburbs would be awoken by smoke billowing in the area at the start of the week.
They have threatened to block Grayston Drive and major routes around Sandton with burning tyres, in order to get the attention of City of Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba.
Alexandra residents have been calling for Mashaba to come and address their demands since Wednesday. Earlier this week Mashaba sent his MMC Michael Sun to the area, despite requests that he come to the township. Sun, was booed while trying to address the crowd, with some even hurling racial insults at him.
Mashaba said he did not attend the mass meeting on Friday because there was no agreement in place. He added that he was leading a civic funeral at the same time and could not have made such a commitment.
Mashaba promised to visit the area on April 15.

Msimanga said in a statement on Saturday that he will be accompanied by DA Johannesburg Regional Chairperson, Tsepo Mhlongo and DA Alexandra Constituency Head, Mervyn Cirota when he lays a criminal complaint of incitement of violence against the ANC at the Alexandra police station.
“The charges also include the influencing of the outcome of the upcoming general elections through instigating a protest in a peaceful Alexandra township. The violent and destructive action that took place in Alexandra was not a service delivery protest but rather criminal chaos, which is being carefully coordinated by the ANC and its affiliates.
“These actions by the ANC goes against the IEC rules and the ANC must be banned from participating in the May general elections,” said Msimanga.
Gimmicks
ANC acting spokesperson Dakota Legoete said they will not dignify Msimang’s gimmicks with a response.
“His attempts to deflect attention from the DA’s failures in Alexandra and their blatant refusal to account will not succeed,” said Legoete.
A man was left injured and another in a critical condition after a tanker trailer at a factory they were working on exploded.
According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the incident took place around 14:40 at a factory in Alberton, Ekurhuleni.
Herbst said the employees were working on the tanker, trying to fix it, when the tragedy struck.
“What our paramedics learnt when they arrived on the scene, is that the two men together with a third one, were trying to fix a gas tanker in the factory. The tanker was empty at the time when the men attempted to weld it. The tankers then exploded killing one man and leaving another in critical conditions,” he said.
Herbst said paramedics tried to resuscitate the deceased but to no success.
However, the third man who sustained minor injuries, was treated on the scene and refused to go to hospital.
Rolling Stones fans were concerned by the news Mick Jagger needs a new heart valve. But they’ll be happy to know that these days most patients in his situation can get what they need – and often without intensive surgery.
Giving the millions of fans some Satisfaction, is that Jagger is recovering and in good health after undergoing the heart valve procedure in New York City, reports the Associated Press.
Jagger is being monitored for any complications that could occur, such as excess bleeding, sources told Billboard.
Plenty of company
Jagger has plenty of company. More than 5 million Americans live with heart-valve disease. In 2013, the most recent year for which numbers are available, more than 100 000 people had heart-valve surgery, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
Dr Catherine Otto, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, offered this primer on the heart’s four valves – and how they can malfunction.
The two valves on the right side, which pump blood into the lungs, are rarely a problem, said Otto, co-chair of the committee that wrote the latest American Heart Association guidelines on heart-valve disease. The valves on the left, which pump blood into the body, are typically the issue when something goes wrong, she said.
If one of these valve narrows, blood can’t go forward without the heart working extremely hard to push it, she said. And if a valve leaks, the heart has to pump extra blood to make up for it.
Wear and tear
“It’s a very delicate structure that with time can become a little bit thicker and get a little bit of scar tissue,” said Dr Robert Bonow, professor of cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and co-author of those AHA guidelines.
A small percentage of people are born with malformed valves; many live for decades without problems. But even an anatomically normal valve is opening and closing with every heartbeat. Dr Bonow did the math: For someone with an average heart rate, the valve opens about 3 billion times over 80 years.
“It’s just one of those things that if you live long enough, these valves will begin to wear out at some point,” said Bonow, a past AHA president.
Risk factors include the same ones that lead to heart attacks, high cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes, Bonow said.
“But even people who have no risk factors, including athletes, can develop problems,” he said.
Valves can be replaced
Symptoms can include chest pain or palpitations; shortness of breath; fatigue; lightheadedness or swelling in the ankles, feet or abdomen. But the warning signs can be “very subtle,” Otto said. (Jagger, in fact, was spotted frolicking with his girlfriend and toddler son in Miami Beach just after the band cancelled upcoming tour dates because of his health.)
Otto said the most common symptoms she sees include reduced ability to exercise. Patients get out of breath, fatigued or just don’t feel like doing it.
“If they get to the point of actually having chest pain with exertion or shortness of breath or dizziness or passing out – those are really more severe symptoms of the disease,” she said.
Worn-out valves can be replaced with new ones made from metal or from animal tissue. And treatment has undergone a “transformative” change in recent years, Bonow said, with the growth of a procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR. The aortic valve is on the left side of the heart and releases blood to the body’s main artery, the aorta.
Some risk
Until recently, complicated open-heart surgery was standard. But with TAVR, a replacement valve can be inserted without surgery by puncturing a leg artery, inserting a new valve, threading it up to the heart “and just popping it in place”, Otto said.
“It’s a very short procedure – it takes an hour or two at the most,” she said. The patient is the hospital overnight or maybe a couple of days, followed by a week or two of recovery at home. That compares with six weeks to three months of recovery for surgery.
TAVR is currently approved in people for whom open-heart surgery would be considered risky, although both doctors were excited about a recent study indicating TAVR can produce results comparable to traditional surgery in even low-risk patients.
Also, Dr Otto noted, if the problem is related to the mitral valve – that’s less likely in someone Jagger’s age – a transcatheter approach is possible, but a patient is more likely to need open-heart surgery.
The good news is that barring complications, heart valve problems are usually “pretty much alleviated completely” by treatment, she said. “There is some risk up front, but the outcomes are excellent.”

However, Naby Keita’s first goal for the club brought the visitors level before Salah and Henderson’s strikes took Liverpool two points clear of Manchester City, who still have a game in hand.
The league leaders also needed late goals to beat Fulham and Tottenham in their last two games, but they refuse to give up the chase of a City side eyeing history with a quadruple of trophies.
Southampton started the evening just five points above the relegation zone at the other end of the table, but had won their past two games as part of a general upturn in form since Ralph Hasenhuttl took charge in December.
And the hosts looked more like the side going for the title in the early stages as they went in front on nine minutes.
Ryan Bertrand’s cross picked out the run of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg into the box and his flick-on looped over Andy Robertson for Long to control and score just his fourth goal in his last 50 Premier League appearances.
That was also the Irishman’s 50th Premier League goal and he should have had 51 shortly after when he failed to connect with another dangerous Bertrand cross and Virgil van Dijk nearly turned the ball into his own net against his old club.
Keita has failed to live up to expectations since his £53 million move from RB Leipzig last summer, but the Senegalese could hardly have picked a better moment to score his first goal for the club nine minutes before the break.
Southampton were left angry that Salah was not flagged offside in the build-up, but the ball eventually fell for Trent Alexander-Arnold and his in-swinging cross was met too powerfully with his head by Keita for Gunn to keep out.
Liverpool had far more control of the game after the break, but had to wait until 10 minutes from time for the crucial goal and it came on the counter-attack from a Southampton corner.
Salah latched onto Henderson’s headed pass and ran from inside his own half before curling in his first goal in nine games from just outside the box.
Henderson had been left on the bench from the start by Klopp, but the Liverpool captain made his presence felt as a substitute as he then burst into the box to finish off Roberto Firmino’s low cross to seal a vital three points.
