The ‘Skinny Bitch Collective’ Is Under Fire for Using Locals as Props in Kenya Workouts
A workout program that's been dubbed one of the most "exclusive" fitness classes on the planet has the internet outraged. Skinny Bitch Collective (the name really says it all, doesn't it?) held an invite-only retreat in Kenya, and over the weekend, videos surfaced of students using native Maasai tribesmen as literal props during one of the workouts.
Multiple videos that were posted to Instagram show about 10 women (all of whom appear to be white and are very tall and thin) working out with the Maasai tribesmen standing as a backdrop, doing a traditional dance, or posting up as obstacles for the women to crawl around.
The Instagram account @diet_prada posted the videos and wrote: "It’s 2019 and apparently people still haven’t learned that POC/ethnic groups don’t exist to embellish already privileged lives. The Colonial mindset is alive and well."

Needless to say, the internet is having none of SBC's ignorance. One user commented, "As an African woman I am tired of seeing my people relegated to play in the background. As a Kenyan woman it enrages me to see my people being used as PROPS, being ridiculed in his posts, being used to be their personal 'cheerleaders,' asking them to perform their traditional jump/dance to add to the 'atmosphere' of their workouts."
Russell Bateman, the founder of Skinny Bitch Collective (SBC), reportedly posted an apology on Instagram, but his account has since been deleted. (His website is also "down for maintenance.")
Multiple outlets have reported that his apology explained the group was required to be accompanied by the tribe at all times because the retreat was taking place on the tribe's ancestral lands.

"Our intention was to promote a cross-cultural exchange through shared experiences, and to highlight the beauty of Kenya and its indigenous people," Bateman reportedly wrote, according to BuzzFeed. "We accept and understand that our content fell well short of this aim, and lacked appropriate cultural sensitivity by reinforcing colonial era stereotypes of people of color."
SBC has previously been criticized for its exclusivity and bizarre practices. As the name suggests, Bateman's targeting a *very* specific clientele—and the classes are invite-only.
After a reporter for The Cut tried the class, she wrote: "I knew that I was in the right place because, at five-foot-three, I was the shortest person in my class of 35 people. Everyone looked like girlfriends past, present, and future of Leonardo DiCaprio."
RELATED: Influencers Are Revealing the Most Hurtful Comments They Get With These Clap Backs
One of SBC's signature (and most outrageous) moves involves women pairing up and getting down on all fours. Each pair then does a sort of face-off where they shuffle around with their hips in the air trying to slap their partner's butt. Another equally degrading move has the women run while carrying their partner on their back (because who wouldn't enjoy carrying a sweaty stranger around?).
A reporter for Cosmopolitan who tried the class was baffled by a move that required the women to brace their abs while their partner threw punches at their stomach. "It's a good thing I don't have trust issues—and even better that I didn't break a rib," she wrote.
SBC is clearly problematic for more reasons than one. The purpose of group workouts is to build each other up, and if you ever find yourself in a setting that seems to be doing the opposite, don't hesitate to leave. Groups like SBC aren't worth your time.

Sport24.co.za | Davids grateful for the opportunity to reward Powell’s trust
Cape Town – The Springbok Sevens will always come first for Selvyn Davids and although he was named the Canada Sevens Player of the Final on Sunday (early Monday morning SA time), the diminutive speedster said it was all part of the team effort.
The 24-year-old played an instrumental role in helping the Blitzboks claim a first tournament win in Vancouver’s BC Place, as well as their first tournament victory in the current World Rugby Sevens Series.
The scrumhalf/sweeper revelled in his promotion to the starting line-up. Davids tackled and clocked running meters like no other, while crucial tries against Fiji and France and a trusted left foot that delivered 17 conversions – more often than not from the tightest of angles – made him the top scorer at the tournament.
But Davids also moved into the digital age this weekend when the Blitzboks played Wales on Saturday. Early in the match, Davids was surrounded by four defenders when he used his soccer skills to keep the ball in play in a move that resulted in a South African try.
Videos of a sublime tackle on Fijian flyer Aminiasi Tuimaba in the semi-final and the soccer kick against the Welsh trended on Twitter, with the latter even getting football clubs in South Africa joining in by inviting Davids to training when back home.
To be named top player twice in 11 outings in the highly competitive World Rugby Sevens Series is not something to be sniffed at, but for Davids, who walked away with the same accolade in Hong Kong just under a year ago, it was never about him.
“I did not expect to be named Player of the Final, but this award is as much the team’s as it is mine,” he said.
“Without them, I would be nothing. We play for each other that is what the team stands for. Remember, when you put that jersey on, it is not about you anymore. It is about the team and those that the jersey represent.”
Davids admitted some nerves and emotion as they contested the first final he was involved in: “This was my first final, so it was very emotional, but I knew I had my teammates backing me and I had trust in them.”
Davids only earned his starting berth this weekend in Vancouver, with Blitzbok coach Neil Powell previously opting for the vastly experienced Branco du Preez to start in the scrumhalf/sweeper position. Powell also had Rosko Specman in that position as well for the opening two tournaments of the series, so playing opportunities was limited for the Eastern Cape man.
“Branco has been a stalwart in the team and I learned so much from him and Rosko as well as Cecil Afrika in the last couple of seasons,” said Davids.
“Even when coach Neil said that I was going to start, Branco still supported me. I want to thank both for that support. I am just happy that I took my chance and did justice to the confidence coach had in me.”
For Davids, who made his debut in Hong Kong in 2017 when he replaced an injured Specman, the often-spoken about processes and structures in the Blitzboks team make perfect sense.
“We have a ‘small box, big box’ system in the team. The big box is the game plan and the structures and processes we follow, the small box is the players and how we express ourselves inside that bigger box. We did that very well this weekend,” he explained.
News24.com | A shredded book, a passport: A heartbreaking look at what the 157 victims left behind
What little was left was heartbreaking: A battered passport. A shredded book. Business cards in many languages.
Searchers in white gloves and canvas shoes picked their way through the scattered remains of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 for a second day on Monday, gingerly lifting from the scorched earth the pieces of 157 lives.
The tattered book, its pages singed, appeared to be about macroeconomics, its passages highlighted by a careful reader in yellow and pink.
There was a shattered keyboard. Playfully printed T-shirts.
There was even a plaintively ringing mobile phone, picked up by a stranger and silenced.
The dead came from 35 countries. As their identities slowly emerged from shocked families, governments and employers, a common strand became clear.
The flight that set off on Sunday morning from Ethiopia’s capital, faltered and plowed into the earth six minutes later was full of people unafraid to take on the world and its problems — and explore it, too.
The plane held 32 people from neighboring Kenya, including a law student and a football official, a toll that left the country numb. Ethiopia lost 18 lives.
“A spirit to serve the people of the world…”
Others came from afar, to work or play: A satirist. A former ambassador. Tourists. An accountant.
But the number of humanitarian workers was shockingly high.
There were doctors. A child protection worker. Advocates. Environmental activists.
They carried high ideals obscured by mundane, bureaucratic names: Briefing papers. Capacity-building initiatives.
Addis Ababa and the plane’s destination, Nairobi, are popular hubs for aid workers addressing some of the world’s most pressing crises: Somalia. South Sudan. Climate change. Hunger.
“They all had one thing in common — a spirit to serve the people of the world and to make it a better place for us all,” the UN secretary general said.
READ: Government officials, doctors among Ethiopian plane crash victims
Leaders of the United Nations, the UN refugee agency and the World Food Program said colleagues had perished. The UN migration agency estimated that 19 workers with the UN and affiliated organisations were among the dead. A spokesman at UN headquarters could not confirm it.
The UN flag flew at half-staff on Monday, and Ethiopia marked a day of mourning for all.
A steady wind blew on Monday as more remains were found, flashes of humanity among the gritty pieces of hull and wheel.
Beyond the yellow tape around the crash site, huddled figures wrapped in blankets watched in silence.
