Police officers cried tears of relief on Wednesday night when they scooped up two exhausted little boys 7km from home, a day after another boy had been found after going missing in Motherwell.
“One of the police officers, Lieutenant Colonel Jesvin Arends, said when he found the boys, he teared up with extreme relief and emotion,” said police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu on Thursday, speaking about the rescue of the Eastern Cape boys who had been missing.
“He just grabbed the boys in his arms. They were so small.”
Othandwayo Zenzile, 4, Linandle Zenzile and Nande Nombewu, both 3 years old, disappeared on Tuesday afternoon after they were last seen playing in an open field near the home of one of the children.
Their parents spent hours searching for them, and eventually turned to the police for help at 22:00.
Police on Wednesday appealed to the public to assist with finding the three named boys.
A massive search party consisting of local residents and at least five police units, including the dog unit, searched through bushes, open fields, from door-to-door – everywhere they could think of, a statement by Naidu said.
A whimper behind a sand dune
A helicopter also buzzed over the area hoping for a sighting of the boys.
The first child, Linandle, was found at about 14:25 on Wednesday by workers at the Amanzi quarry. He was simply sitting on a weighbridge at the quarry between Uitenhage and Motherwell.
The quarry workers called Uitenhage police and the little boy was fetched and taken to the Motherwell police station.
The search party then shifted its focus to the quarry and surrounding area, and even more police officers, metro police, rescue dogs and residents joined in, fanning out in the hopes of finding his little friends there too.
The whimper of a child behind a sand dune led Arends and colleague Warrant Officer Francois Marais to the discovery of Othandwayo and Nande.
To their relief the two missing boys were lying on the rocks on the ground – almost 7km from home – and alive.

Police investigating
Naidu said that Arends saw Othandwayo and Nande first and was so overwhelmed with relief that he started crying.
The boys were scooped up and taken to hospital for medical examinations.
Naidu said that it was still too early to say how the boys got there and police are investigating the circumstances of their mystery journey.
In one of the pictures taken at the scene, one of the children was wearing only one sandal.
The Herald newspaper reported that the other sandal was picked up near where they had last been seen playing.
Major General Dawie Rabie said it was overwhelming to see how people from all over the metro helped in whichever way they could to find the children.
“People came straight from work and joined the search,” said Rabie.
“We are just glad that these children are now safe and reunited with their parents. We urge parents to be extra cautious and to know where their children are at all times. Children as young as these should never be left out of sight,” Rabie said.

Smoking cigarettes has a bad rap and is tied to many health problems, but did you know that it can also affect your bladder health?
Current and previous smokers may have an increased risk for urinary incontinence, especially stress urinary incontinence, which is the most common type.
Stress urinary incontinence literally refers to a type of stress placed on your bladder. It happens when there are episodes of increased intra-abdominal pressure on the bladder (when you cough and sneeze, for instance) and it is caused by a loss of bladder neck and urethral support.
What does smoking have to do with it?
The reason why cigarette smoking can be linked to urinary incontinence and other bladder problems is not exactly clear, says urogynaecologist Dr Sharon Knight. “Some explanations have been proposed, such as nicotine-induced bladder contractility and some other toxins that can be bladder irritants,” she said.
There are other factors that link smoking with an increased risk of incontinence, particularly stress incontinence:
A chronic cough caused by smoking could place more pressure on the abdomen and bladder, potentially leading to stress incontinence as it can damage the muscles of the pelvic floor.
Smoking is a risk factor for bladder cancer, which can present through urinary incontinence at first. According to research published in Reviews in Urology there is evidence that smoking may lead to bladder cancer as each puff of smoke exposes the body to some 60 different carcinogens, many of which are identifiable in urine specimens from smokers.
Interstitial cystitis, a chronic, painful bladder condition that causes a constant feeling of pressure in the bladder, an increase in frequency of urination and urge incontinence, can be aggravated by smoking. Even though a paper in Reviews in Urology states that there is no literature to date that links smoking directly to this specific condition, smoking cessation has been proposed in the treatment plan as smoking might aggravate symptoms and irritate the bladder even further.
Quit – there is no other solution
There are many other factors apart from smoking that can make you prone to urinary incontinence, but as smoking is now known to be a contributor to this condition, it’s a good idea to quit, not only to keep your bladder health intact, but also to stave off a host of other diseases.
It’s no secret that smoking is tied to a host of cardiovascular and lung diseases, but now that researchers have connected urological problems with smoking, urologists should incorporate smoking cessation into their treatment plans.
Quitting smoking is easier said than done, but here are some tips:
Build a support group. Inform your friends and family about your decision and ask them to hold you accountable.
Incorporate nicotine replacement therapy, as it’s been proven that people are more successful at quitting when they make use of this method.
Don’t be discouraged if you break your cigarette fast – simply start again.
Get more exercise and eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Government’s National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme represents a substantial policy shift to restructure healthcare and secure universal health coverage for all South Africans. The success of this ambitious plan and the quality of service lies in the hands of a number of the private health sector’s stakeholders – many of which met recently to discuss challenges and proposed solutions, especially those impacting access for orphan drugs.
Kelly du Plessis, CEO: Rare Diseases SA
“When it comes to patient access we believe that new, viable models to improve access can only be addressed if elevated to a higher political level within each stakeholder constituency and developed through collective conversation involving all stakeholders – which is exactly what this stakeholder meeting aimed to achieve,” says Kelly du Plessis, CEO and Founder of Rare Diseases SA.
With parties including the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra), the Council for Medical Schemes, IPASA as well as large medical schemes among others in attendance, dialogue focused on access not only in terms of contentious prescribed minimum benefits (PMBs) and Section 21, but also on orphan drugs and their availability and cost in South Africa.
Discriminatory
“When a rare disease is not funded purely based on the fact that the treatment is costly would it be fair to say the approach and behaviour around funding rare diseases is discriminatory?” asks Patricia Matseke, principal consultant at Elsabe Klinck Associates.
Of course, given the high complexity, limited treatments and limited number of patients, evidence-based decision for funding is difficult, only to be exasperated by a siloed and fragmented eco-system. It is for this reason, Gavin Bauer, chairman of the IPASA Access Working Group, called for a collaborative eco-system – one that views vulnerable communities such as the rare disease community in the context in which they stand, rare. “Rare disease and access to orphan medicines require a different perspective to essential medicines and when we look at the marginal expenditure growth on these medicines and the decline in utilisation of these orphan medicines within our current medical schemes, one has to question if the medical schemes system has money to fund these orphan medicines and close the funding gap.”
He points to possible solutions including using the increasing level of scheme solvency as funding headroom for rare disease patients but what became evident through the discussion is that schemes are competing on PMBs, rather than standardising these. This needs to be overcome if we are to define PMBs for rare diseases and ensure that our healthcare spend is invested where it is needed most.
It was also collectively agreed that there needs to be new ways and agree on new solutions to ensure that:
The prices of future orphan medicines are determined in a decisively fairer manner;
Patient outcomes become once again the single most important factor in the decision;
Patients are not exposed to unjustifiable access delays or restrictions; and
Investment into our healthcare system by industry continues to be made – encouraging appropriate market access which is regulated.
No orphan drug policy
Sahpra will play a crucial role in access to orphan medicines. Dr Shyamli Munbodh, acting director clinical evaluations and trials and head of sections 21 units, Sahpra says; “Currently there is no orphan drug policy, but we are working on a broader exemption policy guideline which is expected after June this year. It is aimed at providing guidance on exemptions from the requirements for registration of a medicinal product including those that treat rare diseases.”
The Council for Medical Schemes was also optimistic about the progress being made. “The current PMB package is hospicentric and does not sufficiently include primary preventative healthcare services in support of customer care and we are working on reviewing this. It is a process and with any policy change there will need to be constant revisions and changes. What is evident is that there has to be public-private partnerships for sustainability.”
Unprecedented opportunity
Rare Diseases SA has always been committed to engaging with the Council for Medical Schemes, medical schemes themselves and the National Department of Health to find solutions to access of healthcare for the rare disease community and these stakeholder engagements are critical for advocacy and engagement.
“We have an unprecedented opportunity to address the unmet medical needs of people living with rare diseases and we need to unlock the deadlock we find ourselves in when it comes to access. Access to healthcare is a universal right – it’s not going away, and respective stakeholders need to move forward if we are to get NHI right. When we talk about universal healthcare, resources constraints alone – cannot justify inaction,” concludes Du Plessis.
