A global medical research company based in Durban is looking for a head of data to drive their data environment/function into an exciting new direction. With a massive injection of funding into their technology, this company is pushing the boundaries of how technology and data can impact scientific and medical research globally. Using data to help diagnose and detect diseases, through machine learning, business intelligence, and predictive models.

As the head of data, you will be working with the CIO and CTO to create the data roadmap and implement cutting-edge technologies to drive data within the organisation.

You will be leading/growing the data team made up of business intelligence/database/data warehouse developers, data scientists, and data analysts. With a huge investmentinto their IT function, you will be scoping out andimplementing new tech (particularly within big data and analytical software).

Duties:

• Experience team leading/managing a data team (happy to look at very senior business intelligence applicants who can take the next step up in their career).
• Data management and large-scale system development.
• Pulling together datasets/creating analytical datasets for statistical analysis (R, SAS, Stata).
• Experience in database design/ development (SQL Server/ MySQL/ PostgreSQL
• Experience in data migration, using ETL to integrate huge amounts of data.
• Experience with Pentaho would be ideal.
• Creating data visualisation dashboards with BI reporting tools.
• Liaising with stakeholders (both technical and non-technical stakeholders).
• Practical experience and thorough understanding of traditional software development in high-level languages such as C# and Java.
• Knowledge of RedCap, Survey Solutions, and DataFax.
• Passion for and the desire to learn big data technologies (any big data experience is highly desirable).
• Knowledge of Hadoop, MongoDB, Sprak.
• Knowledge of machine learning techniques.
• Working within an Agile environment.

Requirements:

• Working closely with development team within a large-scale system environment.
• Data management and creating insights for data-driven decision-making.
• Database design and development (SQL Server/PostgreSQL/MySQL).
• ETL experience with SSIS/Pentaho.
• Practical experience/understanding of software development with languages such as C# or Java.
• Experience working with big data/machine learning (Hadoop, Spark, Cloud, R).
• Data visualisation reporting tools (PowerBI, QlikView, Tableau, etc).
• ITIL, COBIT, and/or DAMA DMBOK.
• Based in Durban/willing to relocate to Durban.

The following would be advantageous:

• Experience with datasets within the medical/scientific field.
