Africa’s smartest business information company, Maritz Africa, is seeking a junior editorial assistant. Maritz Africa is the publisher of pan-African online business publication How we made it in Africa (www.howwemadeitinafirca.com), Africa Private Equity News, How we made it in Africa: The book and is also involved in several other business media projects. The position is based in Cape Town. Although this is ideally a full-time position, we are open to part-time and flexible working arrangements.
The role
The successful candidate will work alongside How we made it in Africa’s Publisher and Editor-in-chief and will be responsible for a variety of editorial and other administrative tasks.
Duties will include:
- Assist with content production across several media platforms
- Create engaging social media content
- Write articles
- Liaise with clients

The company has since produced numerous other publications and media products. Our clients include some of Africa’s biggest companies, including Microsoft, Standard Bank, DHL, Orange, Siemens, EY, UCT Graduate School of Business, PwC and Barclays, to name a few.
In 2011, How we made it in Africa was one of the three shortlisted publications, together with The Africa Report and Reuters, in the Media of the Year category of the Diageo Africa Business Reporting Awards. In November 2013, How we made it in Africa also won a Bronze Award in the Specialist Publisher category of The Bookmarks awards. The awards recognise and reward excellence in digital media and publishing in South Africa.
We are a small team of mostly remote workers. You will learn the ins and outs of the media business in a way a large media house can never offer. Since you will be working side by side with the founder of the company, you might also pick up some entrepreneurship tips. Every day you will also be exposed to entrepreneurs and business people from across Africa.
The company is in the process of launching several exciting projects, so there are plenty of growth opportunities. We would love for the successful candidate to quickly progress in the company, take on more responsibilities and make more money. It is up to you.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a recent graduate in journalism, business, economics, marketing or a related subject. The candidate should be resourceful and able to work without supervision. The successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:
