The Stellenbosch University Language Centre’s Academic Literacies cluster focuses on the development of reading, writing and critical thinking skills that are required for success in an academic environment. All the modules in this cluster are relevant to students’ fields of study and future professional careers and focus on developing competencies that students can apply across the curriculum. Students are encouraged to identify and solve problems, as well as gather, analyse, order and evaluate information in written texts.
The tasks and responsibilities of a lecturer/coordinator at the Language Centre can be divided into four main categories: teaching and coordination of modules and short courses; presentation of courses and workshops to local and international students, staff as well as external participants; course administration; and context-specific research to determine and inform best practice.
Duties:
- Coordinating and presenting academic literacy modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
- Developing course materials that are driven by innovative and appropriate teaching approaches (including blended learning) and that create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students;
- Managing all administration relating to relevant modules;
- Liaising with faculties regarding existing academic literacies modules;
- Training and mentoring facilitators/tutors who assist with teaching within academic literacy modules;
- Reviewing and refining syllabus and course materials, tests and other assessments on an ongoing basis and updating all of these when required;
- Presenting ad-hoc workshops and short courses on academic literacy skills or other language-related content to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as to external clients where required;
- Performing context-specific research to inform best practice in the field of academic literacy and for reporting purposes.
Requirements:
- An appropriate Master’s degree in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, or other related fields;
- A minimum of three years’ teaching experience in the higher education environment, specifically in academic literacies;
- Experience in curriculum development and assessment protocols;
- High organisational skills and the ability to work in a complex academic environment;
- Experience in blended learning and developing e-learning material;
- Ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines;
- Evidence of teaching ability and fostering a positive learning environment for students;
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook);
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Recommendations:
- A PhD, or enrolled for a PhD;
- A commitment to continuous professional development;
- Knowledge of Stellenbosch University’s learning management system (Moodle);
- Evidence of accredited publications in academic literacies, second language acquisition and/or related topics.
Shortlisted candidates must be willing to take a computer proficiency test, as well as to practically demonstrate an aspect of teaching academic literacy or second language acquisition.
