Kaizer Chiefs recorded their first league win of the new Gavin Hunt-led era with a narrow 1-0 victory away from home over Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.
The final scoreline flattered the hosts with Kaizer Chiefs dominant for much of the contest with the majority of the first-half action taking place in their opponent’s defensive third.
Striker Leonardo Castro went close with a header in the 24th minute that struck the upright as Chiefs hit the woodwork on the first of three different occasions.
Midfielder Lebogang Manyama then struck a fierce free-kick from distance in the 31st minute that again struck the crossbar from 30-yards out.
Khama Billiat then completed the trio of near misses when he hit a left-footed effort that was only kept out by goalkeeper Veli Mothwa’s post in the 38th minute.
Chippa seemed happy to sit back for the majority of the first period and attack Chiefs on the counter down Reeve Frosler’s right flank but had little to no goal threat with just the one attempt at goal.
The scores remained goalless at the break.
The game continued in the same vein for much of the second-half as the first with Chiefs totally dominant in search of an opener.
Manyama again went close in the 64th minute after being played in by Khama Billiat but Mothwa was equal to the challenge with a smart save at his near post.
Cardosa then again called Mothwa into action soon after before some frantic goalmouth action saw the goalkeeper pull off an incredible double-save to deny Chiefs from two successive corners-kicks.
Chiefs finally broke the deadlock via an own goal in the 77th minute after some neat interchange play by Manyama and substitute Bernard Parker.
Manyama’s low crossed bounced awkwardly and forced Gregory Damons into putting the ball into his own net.
To underline Chiefs’ dominance, with under 10 minutes to play Hunt’s side had recorded 20 shots at goal compared to Chippa’s solitary effort.
