A Research Nurse x 2 vacancy is available at our Client Wits Health Consortium’s Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) in Port Elizabeth – Eastern Cape.
Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
The Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) was initiated in 1998 by Professor Ian Sanne, under the auspices of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). Today the CHRU is an HIV/AIDS, TB and Cervical Cancer research syndicate of the Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (WHC), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of WITS.
The CHRU is proudly the first International Clinical Research Site (CRS) of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). To date it remains one of the most successful international sites within the ACTG. The site is substantially funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and USAID/PEPFAR.
Based at the Helen Joseph Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, the CHRU conducts research into HIV-AIDs, carrying out clinical trials that encompass associated dread diseases (TB, Cervical Cancer and other opportunistic infections) and provides technical expertise and assistance, training of health care personnel, quality assurance assessments of sites, and clinical support services.
Main purpose of the job
- To provide best practice data collection, clinical assessments and management, collection of specimens and care according to protocols
- To screen and enroll patients into the study and to conduct on-going follow-up based on the research protocols

Key performance areas
- Ensure that patients meet eligibility criteria for screening
- Ensure adherence to the enrolment process
- Collect vital signs of patients
- Inform patients of test results
- Assist with baseline assessment interviews
- Treat diagnosis according to test results or laboratory diagnoses
- Collect blood and sputum sample from patients
- Perform ECG tests for patients
- Provide appropriate health education and adherence counselling where necessary
- Refer patients to alternative care if necessary
- Clean and sterilise all used speculum and equipment
- Provide protocol training for other staff as the need arises
- Maintain full clinical records for all patients
- Follow up on patient results
- Assist doctor with clinical procedures in the case of emergency
- Maintain study documentation according to the GCP principles
- Complete accurately, all necessary study documentation as required
- Quality control study documents
- Compile relevant reports and feedback on all activities
- Complete lab requisition forms
- Ensure minimum stock level are maintained within the clinic
- Liaise with the administrator to procure stock required
- Update patient medical files and copy patient files for filing purposes
- Ensure patient reimbursement
- Liaise with wards for in patients
- Ensure that clinic stock is ordered on time
- Ensure that stock is used correctly and avoid wastage
- Ensure that the room is clean, hygienic and hazard free
- Ensure maintenance of the emergency trolley
- Act as back up to complete compliance check in respect of medication issued to patient
- Develop Infection control SOPS for the clinic
- Train staff on relevant SOPs and policies
- Complete engagement assessments for new staff and annual assessments for existing staff
- Maintain infection control within the clinic
Required minimum education and training
- Diploma in General Nursing
- Experience in undertaking and managing independent data collection is essential
Professional body registration
- Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Required minimum work experience
- Minimum 3 years nursing experience in TB Management
- Research experience would be preferred
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- Diploma in Primary Health Care or similar will be an advantage
- Certification in good clinical practice (GCP) will be an advantage
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Respectful with sound work ethic
