Stellenbosch University International (SU International) is a support service division that falls under the responsibility area of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Strategy and Internationalisation. We contribute to SU’s institutional objectives and support all faculties with their internationalisation activities. We also ensure that international students have access to an integrated, University-wide package of support services so that internationalisation at SU can continue to grow.
More specifically, we:
- develop and implement SU’s strategic plan to internationalise the University and its core business of research, learning and teaching, as well as social impact;
- form sustainable and meaningful alliances and partnerships to support SU’s academic projects;
- enhance SU’s existing support services to promote global engagement on campus, in the local community, the region, Africa and beyond;
- incorporate an element of global engagement into the student experience at SU, promoting the idea of internationalisation-at-home; and
- help develop scholarship in Africa.
These aims we pursue through our seven centres, namely:
- Africa Centre for Scholarship;
- Centre for Collaboration in Africa;
- Centre for Partnerships and Internationalisation Support;
- Global Education Centre;
- Services Centre;
- Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University; and
- Office of the senior director.
The position supports the communications and liaison requirements of all seven centres and reports to the Manager: Global Partnerships and Internationalisation Support.
Duties:
- Promoting and managing the internal and external communication of Stellenbosch University International;
- Developing and executing a proactive communications plan through effective marketing channels, virtual and physical media platforms;
- Managing web content and developing and implementing the office’s social media communication;
- Promoting and managing the office branding and visual identity and updating and monitoring the office social media accounts;
- Creating visibility and communicating with external audiences via print, online and broadcast channels e.g. the University website, social media, e-mail correspondence, office newsletters, IEASA, and Study International
- Sourcing, producing, editing/rewriting content for the office (SU International and Confucius Institute) and Stellenbosch University websites;
- Managing web content;
- People management – line management of communications intern and occasional visiting interns;
- Liaising with visiting delegations, other visitors and stakeholders (internal and external) as well as international students;
- Supporting and promoting communications relevant to international student recruitment and promotion of SUI activities (branding, visibility, information support);
- Liaising between all SUI centres and supporting the communications strategy of each of the centres, including providing communications support for events and for visiting delegations;
- Producing and planning office print publications (e.g. Living in Stellenbosch, Studying in Stellenbosch) working with designers and printers;
- Planning, sourcing and producing content for the International@StellenboschUni and IOPeninG electronic newsletters;
- Overseeing the publication of the Take Note student newsletter (promoting local and international scholarships);
- Sourcing, producing, and editing/ rewriting content for social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube);
- Keeping abreast on current trends on data, storytelling, and technologies;
- Providing marketing and communication support for office events and conferences; Sourcing conference material, booking photographers and videographers and designing posters;
- Photography and videography – taking pictures at office events. Planning and producing video scripts with external videographers;
- Designing banners, posters and graphics using the Adobe Cloud package;
- Sourcing and managing office gifts;
- Liaising with colleagues in the Corporate Brand and Identity department to streamline office branding to that of the University;
- Representing SUI communications as a member of the University’s Communication Forum working with fellow corporate communicators;
- Working with the University’s corporate communicators on the following platforms: Stellenbosch University Brand Reference Group, Stellenbosch University Website Redesign Panel, Stellenbosch University Social Media Work Group;
- Steering the monthly Stellenbosch University International Communications Forum meeting.
Requirements:
- A degree or postgraduate degree in journalism/media and communications;
- Two to five years’ experience in similar communication and liaising role, preferably within a higher education environment;
- Digital media coordination and management experience (website content management, experience with using SharePoint and social media management). Note that a working portfolio or examples of work will be required as evidence;
- Knowledge of the Adobe Cloud package;
- Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint;
- Knowledge of data analytics tools/ media monitoring.
