Digitas Liquorice is one of Africa’s leading digital marketing agencies specialising in a range of services from web, mobile, social media, CRM, content creation and search engine marketing.
We are seeking a technical director, based in Johannesburg, who will have the opportunity to work on our exciting, challenging and diverse globally recognised brands and who has experience managing a team. Our development projects are award-winning, pioneering, and cutting edge and we seek someone who can continue to drive this success.
Responsibilities and tasks are spanning over developers, multiple account managers and brands, websites, mobile, and social. Typically, the technical director deals primarily with core team of account managers, search specialists and developers. No coding will be required as part of this role.
Tasks/responsibilities
- Curiosity into current and new tech is paramount
- Technically lead project team – provide technical vision and leadership. Technically provide strategic direction and oversight to members of the project team
- Manage Project timelines and Project budgets. Provide good faith effort estimates.
- Mentor lower level developers within the team. Show a genuine intent in fostering the learning or development of others
- Reviewing briefs from a technical perspective
- Creating and reviewing Technical Specs
- Raising usability and functional concerns
- Research into newer technologies – reading appropriate technical journals and books
- Attending relevant conferences, tutorials, and training courses
- Personal Development – stay current with relevant industry advances and trends
- Collaborate professionally with other team members
- Manage Resources needs– Identify required human resources and evaluate potential technical team members
- Produce high quality products – improve work products whenever practical. Request changes to, and report defects in, work products
- Develop reusable intellectual capital
- Process orientated – ability to identify operational improvements
- Reporting – provide input for regular team status reports.
- Conflict resolution and facilitation. Facilitates meetings effectively, deciding when to advocate, and when to compromise to arrive at mutually acceptable decisions and solutions.
- Networking – develop and maintain friendly, professional, and supportive relationships and networks of contacts with people and organizations who are or might be, useful in achieving work-related goals.
- Innovation – seek opportunities to implement innovative new ideas, tools, and techniques.
- Knowledge sharing – participate, foster and encourage effective group discussions and activities, while also encouraging others to do the same.
- Efficiency and speed of the department to ensure that the team are meeting key deadlines

- Ability to know when to follow the process and when to obtain waivers
- Able to technically mentor all members of the project team
- Highly self-directed and proactive
- Able to prioritise, multitask, and make critical decisions given incomplete and conflicting knowledge
- Solid knowledge of project requirements, architecture, design, implementation, and testing.
- In-depth knowledge of project technologies (manage, monitor and track projects from initiation to completion )
